Totally confused about surround sound

Hi,
I've tried to get my head around it but nothing seems to click.
Obviously i want a surround sound system, and I've gathered a 5.1 surround sound system will be fine since i believe 7.1 are more expensive.

I've got an old grundig sky digibox and some people say this can't be connected to surround sound, other says it can. Since getting my Samsung HDTV LCD the sound from the sky box is distorted so i'm looking to replace it with freesat.

Ok, so what would i need to hook up a freesat box, ps3, Samsung HDTV LCD tv to a surround sound system?

Thanks very much in advance!

For a start you will need a surround sound amplifier,
A decent one will have multiple inputs for all your gear,
Digital optical / coaxial, stereo, component etc.
Most devices have these outputs nowadays.
just pick one for each device.
Then hook up your speakers, and away you go.

I imagine the Grundig will at least have a stereo output, (red/white RCA posts)

The Grundig box will have phono outputs (red and yellow) .

Connected to a decent amp and 6 speakers you will get Pro-Logic II surround sound that will sound excellent if all your used to is little tv speakers.

The amp should have multiple digital inputs so you can then use the PS3 to get true Dolby Digital 5.1 sound aswell as DD from other boxes like Sky HD if you ever get one.

Go to Richer Sounds and tell them what devices you have and what you plan to get and they should give you an amp with enough inputs and a reasonable set of speakers

at the moment its just a old old old grundig sky SD digibox(from the days when sky active was OPEN and games were free), and the audio is distorted when you turn the volume up on all channels since its connected to the hdtv, so i'm looking to replace it with freesat and eventually get a ps3. So basically hooking up freesat HD box and a ps3 and the HDTV.

I've had a look t the back at the box and the only audio inputs are red and white, not red and yellow.

Does the amp come with surround sound 5.1?

I thought you get 4 speakers, and 1 sub woofer like THIS
Thanks

Not tryind to be pedantic, but just for people reading this and getting confused hooking their kit up. It will be Red and WHITE.

Red is usually Right Audio
White is usually Left Audio
Yellow is usually Video

That Kit is 5.1, it has 5 speakers and a subwoofer - the extra (center) speaker in ontop of the amp in the picture

OK thanks everyone. Regarding the distorted audio from the sky box since hooking it up to the HDTV, is that just because the box is so old? And do the appropriate cables come with the systems?

Many thanks
