Mobile reception question
themagicmonkey

My T-mobile reception at home fluctuates from full to weak even though according to the mast finder on the OFCOM website the mast is only a couple of roads away. But there's a main railway line running through the village and yesterday while I was texting I noticed that the fluctuation seemed to correspond with an intercity going past, getting better as the train went out of earshot. Is it possible that all the extra phones on the train weaken the signal as the train goes through? (The mast only serves the village because it's in a valley.)

If it's a main line it could probably be the electrical field of the power lines for the train as it passes. They run on 1000s of volts!!

As the line that powers the train is "live" all the time, the magnetic field would be present all the time too so i'm doubting it's that?

But a current only flows when the train completes the circuit.

What handset have you got? Try changing the network mode from 3G/Dual Mode to 2G/GSM to see of that resolves it.

There is always going to be a train on the line somewhere on the track.

Makes no difference, the magnetic flux around that power cable is there whenever AC voltage is present.
It could still be the train causing the problem in some other capacity but I can't think what it might be.
