Woh - We get this type of thread every 6 months

    So my usual suspects:

All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix

Heard It Through The Grapevine - Marvin Gaye (Gladys Knight did the original)

With A Little Help From My Friends - Joe Cocker

The Jam - David Watts (Better than The Kinks, more balls)

The Clash - I Fought The Law (better than The Crickets, who recorded the original after Buddy Holly's death, and better than the Bobby Fuller Four who had success with it in the 60s)

Sex Pistols - No Fun (I like The Stooges version but the Pistols just owned it, it's got so much angst, rage and nihilism it's scary)

Soft Cell - Tainted Love (turned a middle of the road Gloria Jones disco oddity into a classic of it's time)

Dexy's Midnight Runners - Jackie Wilson Said (much better than Van Morrisson)

I often think it's the one you hear first sounds better, which is why I prefer Siouxsie's version of 'Dear Prudence' to The Beatles which I had yet to hear when The Banshees did their cover in the 80's.....

Still stand by it though, better production, extra little musical bits added, excellent example of a successful re-working of a song as opposed to a straight 'like for like' cover......

My preference has been for The Five Stairsteps cover of 'Dear Prudence', but maybe I'm alone in that.

"I fought the Law" Bobby fuller Four

better than any other version including the clash.

Its a shame Bobby died (muredered?) soon after the record came out, he would've been a legend.

Yeah, again I think this goes back to my 'one you hear first' theory.........

I was too young for Bowie's original and when I bought Bauhaus' cover I thought it was terrific........didn't even know it was a cover version at that tender age..........

Then when I did hear Bowie's original composition about five years later it seemed lethargic by comparison.......thought Bauhaus' version had much more zip and vigour about it..............

    The Hoosiers - It's a Hit

They covered it at Glastonbury, I mucho prefer this one to the We Are Scientists Original. Ignore the Music Video as its the only cover of the song I can find.
