Guilty Pleasures - Dinners you wouldn't normally touch, but have once in a blue moon.
I wondered if anyone else had a really rubbish meal, that they don't even really like but have once in a while.
For example, with me it's Cheese Filled Findus Crispy Pancakes. They're absolutely vile, (but perfectly edible to me). I buy them maybe once a year or even less, and have them when I fancy a sort of 'nasty' meal. I never even ate them as a child, but they fascinate me. They're not pancakes, they don't taste of cheese etc - why on earth do I just fancy them now and again. I had them tonight, the rest of the week I'd had good stuff like Halibut (mmmm), Salmon and other tasty stuff. So am I the only one? or does anyone else have a weird dinner they don't really even like, but have every now and then. |

They still make Crispy Pancakes? I could have sworn they took them off the market about ten years ago when they found glass in a batch of them.

I read the thread and before I even opened it, I was thinking Findus Cheesy Pancakes! They rock
![]() But nobody in this house knows it. Oh no. Just me!! Homemade chicken goujons (nuggets never ever) panfried salmon fillets (whats a fish finger) but when the little darlings are out for the day and the house to myself, now and again these little golden semi circles of pure chemicals are cooked alongside a couple of potato waffles served up with cup of tea, feet up on side table, meal on lap in front of telly possibly showing Columbo (best detective EVER) . Bliss. I never liked the mince beef ones though! Scary even back in the 80's

It wouldn't be a guilty pleasure if I didn't really like it but I love Bernard Matthews Turkey things, really reminds me of school dinners.
There's two that are topped with cheese (My favourite are called Turkey Hamwiches I think) and just love them with beans and a plate of fries. I don't buy them often as they whole thing is incredibly fattening and once they're in the house I'll eat them on 3 consecutive meals cause its such and easy plate of food to make. It's one of those foods I really wish I didn't like, I always have this strange guilty satisfaction after eating it. |

Not sure if it counts but maybe once a month my BF will make us a big juicy steak!!!
I eat very little red meat so its always a bit of a treat and he cooks it so perfectly!!! We usually have it with creamy mash, green beans in garlic and a very chocolate-y dessert. Heaven

Once in a blue moon I crave fried egg on fried bread with brown sauce and beans. So unhealthy but bloody gorgeous!
Once a year when I go away on business i'll have an olympic breakfast at a Little Chef. I feel guilty for eating fried potatoes early in the morning......but not THAT guilty!

My gall bladder is twitching just reading this.
In the days when I could eat it, I loved fish shop cod and chips, lashings of vinegar and a bit of salt. Those were the days

I have to admit I've got a soft spot for Findus Pancakes as well.
I liked Giles Coren's recent description of them...like eating baby food out of a hot slipper! |

I am so glad I'm not the only with the Crispy Pancake cravings. ![]() Quote:

![]() Shows how hard I am, that it would take more than that to faze me ![]() ![]() hmmm, crunchy pancakes. (I only started eating them in my late 20's though! If I'd bought them when I was younger I may have heard of this warning)Quote:

Crab Sticks Quote:
Crab sticks are definitely that sort of food. I can eat them (and enjoy them) if someone else prepares them and puts them in a meal, but I've never been able to buy them. I have no idea where I'd start, those colours... that texture... arggh ... and yet mmm tasty
![]() I admit I have hovered over them in Adsa, but what do you do with them? You can chop them with lots of mayo and pepper and eat them in a sandwich with cucumber, tomato and maybe a little rocket. You can mix them into/ serve them alongside Savoury Rice (as above). They go very well with Salt and Vinegar Crisps. I feel many people are overlooking this wonderful Food group?!!?

Thanks for those tips BCB.
I don't know if I could eat them on their own ... I'd have to work my way up to that. The way I had them years ago they were grated (through a normal cheese grater) and the smaller strips added to something else. I think it was pasta. I might try this myself and then a few weeks later when I've got the taste for them, I'll be dipping them in Marie Rose Sauce and sandwiching them between salt and vinegar crisps in front of the telly ![]()

Packet mash (add water type) with a fried egg. Utterly disgusting under normal circumstances but about once a year it's the only thing I'd like to eat
![]() I used to love cheese crispy pancakes - on a butty with hp blue label sauce *shudders* |

Well seeing as it is my birthday week, I treated myself to a Findus macaroni cheese yesterday.. Normally I cut out a lot of cheese, sat fat and white pasta from my diet, but this nasty, creamy, cheesey monstrosity tastes gorgeous (even though it makes me feel a bit icky afterwards).
