Help with skip-forward/skip back (Vestel T816, Wharfedale 250DTR)

Hi
I haven't been on here for ages, but was browsing the TVonics forum and read this:

Can I do 30-second skips on my DTR250? I know how to skip forward in 2min intervals, but the trouble is that a lot of ad breaks are either slightly less or slightly more, and by the time I rewind, it's taken longer than simply using fast-forward through the break in the first place. If I could do 30-second skips it would be perfect, and much quicker!

Up & Down arrows.

P+ & P- navigate through lists one page at a time.

That's for the T825. The T816 only has 2-minute skip buttons.

Oh well, thought as much. Would be much more useful with 30s skip (as pressing skip forward 8 times to go through a 4 min ad break would take less than a second, rather than the overshooting/using rewind method that is forced on you when you have only 2 minute skips, and ends up taking much longer), but you can't have everything...

I know. Early development software versions had varying skip lengths. At one point the skip time was 30 seconds, another 1 minute and then it got changed to 2 minutes only. I tried my hardest to get Vestel to change this - didn't make sense to me why they had removed the 30 second skip buttons, since those buttons now have no function. But at least they did finally change it in the T825 software so that it can do 30 second and 2 minute skips again.

The quote you used is from a post of mine. Sorry if I mislead you. I should have made it clear that I was referring to the latest T825 vestel PVRs.

I must say, having both T810 and T816, that the 2-minute skip is great for when ad breaks are reliably 4 minutes long, but the 30-second skip is more useful.

With the 2-minute skip on the T816, you have to go thru the dodgy REW when it slightly overshoots a non-reliable 4-minute ad break

Eight times in less than a second?

You're not a woodpecker are you?

I'm afraid I would find pressing the Skip button 8 times to be tedious. I find 2X2m to be acceptable most of the time. Only on rare occasions do I think that the bit I missed may be important enough to justify scrolling back. If I decide I want too do that I usually Skip back 2m and then use FF to find the programme start thus avoiding the doggy REW. The forward Skip button on my Remote is the most heavily used button of them all, evidenced by the fact the marking is almost fully worn off.

Funny you should say that - I was thinking last night, after giving up on trying to program a new OneForAll (it's going back to Amazon) to replace my DaewooTV and Tiscali+ remotes, some of the buttons of which have to be pressed several times before they work and really hurt my fingers... how the Vestel remote is so modestly functional and kind, and the marking doesn't wear off despite menopausal (= frequently hot & sweaty)* me using it daily for over a year, six months of which is on 2 PVRs.

I think that was all one sentence

*Too much info?

I've always thought having a backskip of the same length is a waste for this reason. Reduced to say a third of the forward skip it would be far more useful.

Yes I agree if there is only one Skip duration. However, having both 2m and 30s in both directions on the Vestels provides this to some extent.

I've just purchased an A Grade Humax 9200 from Humax Direct. I'm hoping the 15s "Replay" button will help. Is the Replay button on the Hummy repeatable i.e. press twice to skip back 30s? I'm not sure I'm going to like the user interface generally on the Hummy after the Vestels?

On the Hummy, you can choose the amount of forward skip and backward skip in the "Miscellaneous Settings" menu, and you can press the skip buttons multiple times. Skip-time choices are:

Forward skip: 15sec, 30sec, 60sec, or 120sec
Backward skip: 7sec, 15sec, or 30sec.

As to the user interface -- you will adapt! (That is what we humans are renowned for!)

Well, it's a nice quality pic and build... I shall have to subscribe to the Humax forum now

So will I. Although I have been browsing and occasionally posting in there for a while. My unit is due for delivery tomorrow which will be too late for the latest software OAD which finished today. Apparently these "A Grade" units don't necessarily have the latest Series Record software so I may have to start thinking about doing it myself.

Although configurable forward and backward skip would be good, 30 seconds is the optimum. One change i would make is to keep the on screen banners to a minimum during playback operations.

I agree about the banners. I don't see the need for it to pop up with every keypress.
