Overall I thought we did well with the summer signings, 12 new players coming in and hardly any money spent, but I think the midfield is our weakest area.

The problem in midfield is that we sent Michael Doyle back to Coventry when his loan finished, and he played a crucial holding/defensive role for us in midfield last season - and was pretty much ever present, with over 40 appearances. But we've lost him and rather than replacing him, have ended up signing no end of lightweight attacking midfielders/wingers instead.

As a result the midfield too often goes missing defensively in games, which is what has led to the big defeats so far - when teams (e.g. Watford) play long ball against us we're fine and can deal with it defensively, but when teams pass/run at us through midfield (e.g. Barnsley), or have a striker intelligent enough to drop off and find the space between our defence and midfield (e.g. Derby, Preston) they just tear us apart.

So despite all the summer signings, what we still lack is a defensive central midfielder who basically needs to play every game. We have signed Amdy Faye who is supposed to be able to do this role, but he hasn't featured yet, is 33 and has questionable fitness so I'm not convinced he is the answer.

Overall, though, we have enough attacking options and quality going forward to score goals, and should do well enough this season to stay up. I just can't see us pushing on for playoffs etc until we get some steel in central midfield.

Best signings of the summer for me - Kasper has been fantastic, I have no doubt that we wouldn't have conceded 5 or 6 if he had been playing, hopefully he'll be back fit again very soon (he was still wearing a protective cast on his foot on Saturday.)

Sam and Watt have also been good if a bit inconsisent - but fall in to the category of lightweight attacking wide players who offer nothing defensively. Same with Gradel.

Bessone has been awful but it's hard to be too harsh on the other defenders when they get no protection from the midfield.

Somma has also been a revelation up front and should start every game. I'm not sure who the best partner for him is, but with Becchio, McCormack and Paynter we have options in attack.

I'm enjoying the season so far anyway, and looking forward to seeing how we bounce back from Tuesday's performance against Ipswich on Saturday! ”

Hi all , nice to see the Leeds thread alive again I agree, considering the national fan base we have it is strange there arnt many on here maybe they don't like DS.

Coen I agree with everything you have said in your well worded post. I posted in July and said then consolidation is all I want anything else will be a bonus.
Doyle is not a player i'v ever taken too , but to his credit last season he quietly just got on with his job and I agree not been replaced in the defensive midfield role. Lloyd and Watts as you say are lightweight and seem to get knocked of the ball to easily they are good going forward but need to beef up a bit as this makes Howson and Kilkenny job a lot harder , Johnson in his fairness gets back and is not scared of mixing it but he gives to many free kicks away in the process.

As for Kasper what a keeper he has made some world class saves at times and is like a defender himself when he comes out of his area to take a kick , I like that because passing it around at the back is a recipe for disaster for us, this way we are on the attack straight away. Another positive is young Bruce i like him and he will improve as the season goes on ,what we are missing is Pat Kisnorbo does anyone know when he is due back, what a player. As for the rest of the defence they are not used to eachother and it shows.
Atacking im happy with no problems there we will get plenty of goals and i'm confident we will stay up. this division every one can beat everyone it was the same last season as Grayson said there will be good times and bad this year but it beats the hell out of going to Hartlepool and Herefords of the football world I'm happy so far.
Hope we all try to post on here a bit more and keep the thread alive and fresh.

Sooner Kasper is back the better. Higgs is crap and the defense is rubbish as well.
Preston could of hit us for 10 to tell the truth.

We do have a good quality team up to Grayson to sort it out.

If he keeps picking the same team (his favs) he will be gone pretty soon.

Unfortunately I don't think Kisnorbo is due back until next year at the earliest, I'd agree we could really do with him back sooner.

Having had Higgs in goal for the last few games really shows just how good Kasper is, in pre-season I wasn't sure who would be first choice as they both seemed to play quite well but there's now no doubt that Kasper is way ahead of Higgs. Hopefully he'll be back after the international break.

And odz1 - I'd agree that Grayson sticks with his favourites too much. It took him forever to drop Naylor even though he was consistently making mistakes that led to goals. He wouldn't start Somma even though the guy was coming off the bench and scoring.

Defensively we're fine dealing with teams that play long ball, we struggle against teams that pass/run at us through midfield - so I'm not sure how much of this is down to defenders not being able to cope with people running at them (Naylor and Collins definitely struggle with this) and how much of it is down to lack of protection from the midfield. Plus it doesn't help that we seem incapable of finding anyone who can play at leftback.

But he now needs to sort out the midfield - and we could well have the options in the squad to do it with Faye, Clayton & Nunez all yet to really feature this season.

Will be interesting to see what team he puts out against Ipswich tomorrow.

Great win on Saturday evening. Middlesbrough were shocking though, their players don't seem to have any fight about them. It was also Grayson's 100th game in charge. His record stands at ..

Won: 56
Drawn: 20
Lost: 24

Win ratio: 56%

Yep good result on Saturday, a much needed win after a few poor results. Boro were indeed terrible though.

I think the first 11 is starting to get itself sorted out now, Becchio and Somma have to be first choice pairing up front and Faye is starting to add much needed bite to midfield. Defensively we're still dodgy, I never feel like we're going to keep clean sheets - we need Kasper back asap!

Lets hope we can keep some good form going against Leicester at home tomorrow, we owe them one for that League Cup defeat.

I see Strachan has got the sack from Boro today as well, shame for him as he is one of my all time favourite players. It was funny seeing 4,000 Leeds fans singing his name on Saturday while the home fans were giving him abuse.

Hello mate, today does seem a good day to bump this thread.

Yep, great win today, and to be sitting in 2nd place at this stage of the season is just fantastic. With the way we've been playing for the last few months, there's no reason why we shouldnt be able to hold on to a play off spot, but surely being able to hang on to an automatic spot is too much to hope for!!

We've looked a lot better at the back since O'Brien came in (even though he's missed the last 2), would be great to add him permanently in Jan. It also looks like we've also settled in to playing 4-5-1 which has been working really well, it does mean Somma and McCormack aren't getting games but McCormack has been pretty effective coming off the bench late in games.

It's also been confirmed today that Becchio has signed a new contract, which was great news as he would have been out of contract in the summer. He's been such a key player for us this season, has done brilliantly as the lone striker.

Hi All Yeah lets give the thread a push

I think O'Brien has been the key to our run we have not lost since we took him on loan, Bates has hinted he'd like him permanent.

The back four as we know have been a problem all season , not helped by Kisnorbo lengthy injury they have not played together on regular basis, A good defense has to know each others strengths and weaknesses but more importantly you need someone to steady the ship, O'Brien has been excellent in that role a no nonsense honest centre back.
Becchio signing a new contract is excellent news.

My target was to survive and consolidate anything else a bonus.

Who would have thought 5 + yrs ago wed be back Debt free challenging for the Championship with a solid foundation and a manager that loves the club as much as we do.
The fans have been awesome AGAIN.

I hope Gradels Strain isn't as bad to keep him out of the Holiday fixtures.

Would love Kisnorbo back but the defense is at last starting to gel great and with a keeper like Kasper behind them no wonder.

Plus Becchio signed on the dotted line on new contract

<cheers coen> readin up about it on BBC , YEP, Waccoe etc

Tough fixture against the Leicester on boxing day. The Bogey team.

If we beat them we must be challengers for title!

Cant believe how we threw this away, dominated the game untill we gave away a daft penalty , then went 2/2 for minutes later , Leeds of old would have folded , but we are a stronger team nowdays , but then maybe some Teams you cant beat no matter what, (not won at Wakers since 2002)
Got two Home games coming up now against Teams we should beat

Not one Leeds United supporter has even thought we are title challengers! We would be happy in mid table.
Maybe we should start thinking of promotion cause we can beat any team in this division! Bring em on!

Hope we get a decent defender in the transfer window, we can't keep leaking goals like this. From being in comfortable positions again Leicester, Preston & now Pompey, we've thrown points away which would seen us top!!!!!

O'Brien definatley must've been confused today, thinking he was still playing for Pompey

Terrific season, wasn't expecting to be anywhere near where we are but now we're up there, I don't want us to blow it

Please don't remind me... two home goals...

Have to say I'm dissappointed that we've thrown away 2 goal leads in the last 2 games, but I too never imagined we'd get to this stage of the season and be pushing for an automatic promotion spot. We really do need to sort the defence out though, far too many goals conceded especially at home.

I'm confident we can get a good result against Boro at home on Saturday, and then Cardiff away on 4 Jan is going to be a real test.

Leeds and 2-0 leads are becoming a thorn in our side even though I'm chuffed with our position....but we went into last Xmas on form then beat Man U in cup but out of nowhere the wheels came off , we couldnt buy a win after that I hope there is no repeat this time.
