I went into Subway about a month ago and asked if they still did the Sub of the Day offer and they said it had stopped and they were running a new promotion, all of which had meat in them. (It was a Friday) Has this been reintroduced or does each store do their own thing?

NB - I nearly had a heart attack when I got back to the UK after an absence, because in the States we have had a Summer Special offer of a foot long sub for $5!!! £2.60ish!! This is any Sub on any day too. They almost refused to believe me when I told them the prices over here. It's time I was outta here again.

I just have cheese and salad and mayo. It's a very meaty kind of shop, so I don't go in that often.

When I do go in, it's usually 'cause the guy who works in there is mental. In a good way.

What I don't understand about Subway is the way that they advertise certain sandwiches (e.g., Turkey Breast) as being low in fat, then act all surprised when you're not interested in the free doughnut that comes with a meal containing said item. If I had a penny for every time I've had the exact same conversation at the place near where I work:

"Turkey Breast and onion on a hearty Italian."

"Meal?"

"Just a small drink thankyou."

"And would you like crisps, or a 'cookie'?" [including doughnuts]

"Neither thankyou. Just a drink I said."

"But it's the same price!!!"

It's bad enough that the logic of advertising food that is relatively low in fat, then attempting to pile on extra unrequested calories doesn't make sense itself. The fact that it's the exact same guy that has the exact same conversation with me each time, and I make clear on each occasion that it's a personal choice and not an oversight, only makes it less easy to understand. I don't go there very often now, since I got fed up with wasting half of my lunch hour in Groundhog Day.

Are there really that many people out there that buy food purely on the basis of the most calories they can get for the least money spent, that my repeatedly-stated outlook is surprising enough to comment upon Each And Every Time?

How are they supposed to know you are buying it just because it is low in fat?

They could try dredging that nugget of information up from one of the last fifty times we've had the exact same conversation. Or, even if we hadn't had the exact same exchange over and over and over, simply reading the huge "LOW IN FAT!!!!!" poster emblazoned across the wall in their store, or merely listening to what I had actually asked for, might give them some clues.

Maybe, just maybe, he doesn't remember every single customers personal preferences, and just does his job instead?

And you missed my point. People don't always buy something healthy for the sole reason of being healthy - they might just enjoy it more.

Bizarrely, he does seem to be able to remember the filling for my sandwich each time. I'll usually get half way through the "I'll have a..." part, and he will finish with a "I know, a turkey breast and onion...", etc part for me. If he's capable of remembering that, I fail to see how he's incapable of remembering the rest of how our preceding interactions have played out. It's not as if I've not explained my preference calmly and politely to the guy - "I'm aware that it's the same price. The thing is, I don't want a cookie. I only want what I asked for, thankyou.". I'm talking at least ten times now we've had that conversation, with the exact same expression of shock and awe at the knowledge that I had not in fact made a mistake in what I'd asked for each time.

If someone had taken the time to explain their personal preference to me in that way, politely and calmly, as I've done several times now, I think I'd have the capacity to remember that, particularly if I was Rain Man when it came to remembering customers' sandwich filling prefences. Most companies have learned these days that 'upselling' isn't good for business; maybe this company will in time too. In the meantime, the lack of common sense on display has given me an additional incentive to make my own sandwiches for cheaper, so I suppose his repeat stupidity has served some useful purpose in the end.

I always get a chicken breast sub on Italian Cheese and Herbs, with cheese, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion and pepper. Lovely!

If there's no chicken I just get a vegie delight on the same bread.

The 12" ones are a challenge unless I am really hungry.
