Unlocking phones - what is done to them.

I got my phone unlocked in Liverpool yesterday and the guy took the cover off and attatched a device to it and it was done ina few seconds.
Have any of you got any insight as to what this device is and what it does. Is it possible to buy devices that will unlock phones?

Inside the phone are 4 bits of memory (bits, not pieces) which are set to lock a phone to a network. By default, a mobile phone will be sim free and available for use on any network and the network lock bits would be set to 0000. I think the bits are in the order Vodafone, Orange, O2, T-Mobile. So, in a phone locked to Orange the bits would be set to 0100 and in a phone locked to T-Mobile would be 0001.

When a phone is unlocked, the shop takes the battery out, plugs in a data cable (£10-15 off the net) and plugs the battery into the cradle of the data cable. Software can be downloaded off the internet (free) that will let you read and write to and from your phone. Using this software, you can unlock the phone.

most shops just have the thing i am on about, where there is no need for software its just a simple press of the button and its done.

i know its more expensive but its cheaper then getting a pc for them.

You can download software to generate unlock codes for nokia dct-4 type phones (most modern nokia phones are dct-4). In the past you had to pay for a dongle to unlock which used to cost a lot of money, with the software its free and fairly simple to do.

Do a search on google for mobile phone unlock kits, there are plenty of sites out there that sell them.

For the Siemens all you need is a data cable and a bit of PC software.
MT50's can be unlocked (ie not limited to one provider in this case crappy T-Mobile)

Some phones are more complicated and some can be done via the keypad.
