Will start by saying I know this is a pretty broad question and there are so many different cameras out there to choose from so it is quite hard to say - just like if someone said to me "pick me a PC" I would really have much to go on so would just have to give them closest to what I have used or think would be ok, so as I always say to people who want me to choose things to give detail, I am trying to go into as detail as much as possible to help
If I explain what the camera is for then it may help. I want to take pictures at football plus just out randomly too, the problem is I can't really use a SLR at football as they are banned, well a lot of grounds would at least question if not eject me so it would be a risk. I saw 2 people getting questioned at Reading about it (although they didn't help themselves having 2 great SLRs hanging from their neck!) so don't really want to get one, I just want a decent quality camera which is better than my phone.
I do not want my pictures to be perfect or anything as I understand that costs loads and I need a SLR like my mate has, but I just want good quality really, there are a handful I have taken which are ok but I would like better, just don't know what I need to make them better. I am using a N95 phone camera at the moment
Some decent ones (did get a better one in Cardiff but can't find it):

and another match http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/384/09042008832nb5.jpg
then the usual host of blurred ones

it’s the last 3 or 4 which are most disappointing as I like player pics so it’s a shame they don’t come out well, obviously the running one was just to see how it turned out, didn’t expect that to be anywhere near decent. The Hargreaves & Pique one is one I would have liked better (the bottom one) especially as they were so close, in an example like that would like it to have both of them clearly recognisable
and my phone also randomly messes up pictures (ruined one of my best ones at England) so I often have to take about 3 to ensure I get it!

Sorry for the long post just trying to give enough detail so anyone who can help will know what I am on about rather than guessing way to high/low quality. Also experiences of battery life would be useful if anyone does recommend a certain model, or sample photos if anyone has used them for football (/general sport I guess) before.
I quite like the specs of Kodak EasyShare Z1275 but it uses battery life really quickly according to various reviews so don’t think I’ll be getting that, just like the idea of the good digital zoom which would be really useful, and also 12MP
Thanks
Zack
