o2 - Transferring number from PAYG to contract

I'm currently on o2 with a Pay as you Go deal and I've got about £40 credit that I've accumulated (I've been topping up the £10 a month to get free texts but rarely spending much until recently), and I'm thinking about signing up to one of the Simplicity sim only contracts (I've recently started using my phone a lot more, particularly to phone o2 numbers).

I know it's easy for them to transfer my current number, and from what I can gather they do transfer balance when you're moving from one PAYG deal to another PAYG deal, but would my credit be lost? Or could it be somehow transferred to the contract, allowing me to have a few months without paying or something?

I've sent a question to o2 via their website, but I thought I'd ask here as well, in case anyone can answer first!

I don't know the answer but i suspect they won't move the credit. Just a gut feeling.

Why not get the O2 My Numbers bolt-on which for £5 a month gives you 1000 minutes/texts to ten O2 numbers? Much cheaper than a contract and will go towards using up some of your £40.

If you top up and get free messages / calls, does common sense not tell you to then use your remaining credit up before topping up again?

When my friend transferred from o2 PAYG to contract, she was told she would lose her credit, when the transfer happened. However the guy in the shop when she signed the contract, checked the balance which was £26, and said, as a gesture of goodwill, gave my mum £20's worth of accesories for her phone, which was a memory card and a phone carrying case.
