Hi,

I recently lost my phone thinking it had been stolen. I phoned up orange and got it blacklisted. Now that I have found i I want it to be unblocked, will they let me unblock it if I phone them up? If so whats the usual process will they ask for my details because I didn't register the sim to my name, in fact I didn't register it at all (before they you didn't have to know you do) So basically will they unblock it for me without asking any details, cause I think they know my name isn't on the the sim nor the phone.

You may have a problem if you haven't registered your details.

I manage to get a block that was accidentally placed on my o2 phone a few years ago lifted though they had my details so knew I had possession of the phone

If your phone was bought brand new then you should be in luck. If you can produce the proof of purchase and send it to them that should be ok - never dealt with Orange so I don't know how awkward they can be, especially if you speak to their people in India.

How did you manage to get it blocked if it wasn't registered to you?

(Otherwise anyone could phone up and block any phone!?)

Well I phoned them up and told them that my phone had been stolen. They asked for my IMEI number and they said it will be blacklisted and would be worthless to anyone who picked it up.

If you have the box/instructions/label with IMEI number on you may be in luck as this could count as proof of ownership

Is anyone else astonished that Orange will block a phone, going solely on the word of someone who isn't the registered owner?

what ur imei or ur secret question
and your house address i persume m8

all i can say is my mam works for orange and il ask her the policy whrn she gets home

The thing is, it wasn't registered with Orange. They have no way of knowing the phone is his.

If they are happy to blacklist an unregistered phone with only the callers word as proof (ie no security questions were passed) then they should unblacklist it.

Gobsmacked actually. Either something is missing from the description of this phone call, or Orange have serious issues.

Nope. Used to do it at T-Mobile as well. as long as you can see it being used on the network on the customers phone number, we considered it okay, its proof enough its theirs, and if it was stolen by the user, then it should have already been blacklisted.

if it was blacklisted in error, then it could be unblacklisted by the person who called to blacklisted it in the firstlplace

Complain to Ofcom all you like, if it wasnt blacklisted on that account, or you/they cant prove its yours, their response will be pretty much "Sad sad, too bad" and any supervisor will know it.

Are you saying that a network will blacklist a phone based only on someone knowing the phone number associated with the SIM used in the phone?
What would stop me picking up a colleagues phone, noting the IMEI, putting the phone down and then phoning you up and blacklisting it because I am the office bully?
I'm going to ask a friend who works for network security at Orange about this. I'm amazed that a network allows this.

The other option is the network has to ignore what could legitamately be a stolen phone, which they are required by regulations to block.

I've spoken to some folk I know worked at 3 and O2, and it the same. if the customer didnt buy it from the network, and they dont know the IMEI, they do a network search, see when the phone was used, and pull the IMEI from the log.
