I am thinking of purchasing a Playstation 3 for playing Blu-Ray DVD's. I am sure I recall reading somewhere that a new PS3 may get released this year....does anyone know ? I'd hate to buy one and then find a new model coming along.

A newer model with a bigger hard-drive is coming out but that's all. Any other changes are made by firmware updates so we are all in the same boat!

If you just want a Blu-ray player and don't care about gaming you should get the Samsung 1500. It's only £189 at amazon with a free film and it's profile 2.0 ready.

An 80gig version is due out in the autumn, the only difference is the hard drive which you can upgrade any way to 250gig for about £40, buy one there great for games and blu ray

A ps3 is an all round media centre, not just a good player.

Doesn't the new package also include the DualShock3 controllers, whereas the current 40gig model does not?

Obviously the controllers will have no impact when using the BluRay, but just in case you fancied cracking out a couple of games you may well want the rumble feature.

My local game shop (independant dealer) told me that the current ps3 console will not play older ps2 games.

If you had bought a ps3 when they first launched (at about £400) they would play older ps2 games.

My local Sevenoaks (Hi-Fi & Vision experts) also tell me that the ps3 as a blue-ray player is fine, and the picture quality will not really be called into question unless compared with a £900+ blue-ray only player. So for £300, you get a half decent blue-ray dvd player AND a games console. Bargain.

There's no news yet as to whether the new package will include the Dual Shock 3, but it's possible.

As for PS2 compatibility, it's been getting steadily worse with each version, it went from good, to patchy, to non-existent now

The PS3 does have advantages over most other BD players in that it can and will be upgraded for new profile versions via patches.

Yeah, a tv tuner 'add-on' is coming I hear also, which will be good for when our sky goes dead when two snowflakes land on the dish!

I have resisted temptations to get freeview because it's just more 'stuff'. And it doesn't snow that often thank goodness.

Anyway, digressing even further, why is your user-name taken from the official chemical name for a sweetener ? And with major risk of sounding 'dumb' - what is a BD player ?

Thanks for replies....I do quite fancy having the games consol as well as a Blu-Ray player. I am sure I read that the new PS3 will be slimmer too. I just don't want to go out and spend my hard earned pennies if a new model is in the pipeline

Do it, I wanted to just get a blu-ray player and was told to get a PS3 and I dismissed it at first but later went with it and it's totally worth it. I didn't want it to play games at first but I have 3 now. If you run it into your TV via a HDMI cable it will upscale standard DVD's pretty well too (although Animation & CGI looks better than live action IMO)

All new ones sold do not play PS2 games at all. They only ever released models with proper built in hardware for playing PS2 games in the US even the earlier European models that would did it via poor emulation software, but hey you can pick up a PS2 for about £40 anyway (that's what I did) and they still will all play PS1 games (I was slow finding that out)

It's a good all round media centre overall though; the only thing I can fault about the PS3 is being unable to unlock the DVD region settings.

only the 60gb was backwards compatable for ps2 games but sales were slow so they chopped the price, HD size and that feature to make it more appealing.

Still the best Blu ray player for the money IMO

I am also trying to decide between a Blu Ray player or PS3.

I would like a to watch Blu Ray Movies and have been known to play the odd game too. But the one thing stopping me is......how noisy is the PS3? I used to have a X-box and the fan noise used to be really distracting when watching a DVD.

My question is the PS3 noisy????

I have never heard the fan on my PS3, it's very quiet.

Thanks for the reply, good to hear the PS3 is quiet, sounds like a PS3 for me then.

Anybody who's had an X-box will know how noisy they are!

Same here, shame my US imported model died after two months

The ease of Blu-ray playback, support for the high end audio codecs and gaming aside it's also a very easy way into the media server experience.

I remember you got your PS3 from Movietyme.

How was the dodgy player sorted?

You didn't lose out £300 did you?

I would have to cover carriage costs there and back so I tried GT Electronics (console repair) and they said they couldn't repair it so I then had a good look inside the box voiding any warranty so yeah an expensive paper weight minus the drives

I got my first DVD player from the US and had no issues there so that's why I risked an imported PS3 assuming any basic realiability would have been engineered out, live and learn.

I bought a Blu-ray/HD DVD drive for the PC to play my Blu-rays and my XE1 has gotten a good work out playing my HD DVD's.

I think its criminal that Movietyme can profit from selling lots of US players then expect you to shell out for repairs after 30 days

No complaints with MT, I knew before hand that there was no practical warranty on the grey market product.
The issue is that the global corporation that is SONY doesn't recognise the global market when it comes to warranties (unlike souring cheap components or labour) and MT are operating as most other US based retailers with issues after a month being dealt with by the manufacturer.
