Ipod file format help ..please

Is there anyway to put artwork on to albums in itunes if the files are WAV files

I was tempted to convert the files into AIFF or APLC as this would enable the artwork feature, but I am unsure which is the better format.

I would love to have all the artwork but I don't really want to substitute sound quality just to be able to enjoy the coverflow.

So which is the better sound AIFF, APLC or WAV? and why is it that WAV files do not support artwork/

Thanks

Artwork relies formats being able to include metatdata tagging, I believe, which is only supported in formats like mp3 and AAC/MP4.

Yup.

You need tags to get artwork on an iPod (you don't on my Cowon A2 but never mind ).

Apparently, Apples lossless CODEC supports tags so that'd probably be your best bet if you want to retain quality and have cover art.

why wav files?

massive waste of space.
no tagging, no art work
massive waste of battery life
use apple lossless if you must
apple ipods sound quality issues kind of defeats any lossless
not that most equipment/people could tell a high bitrate song from lossless or wav in an actual blind test.
if you want to store backups, use flac. convert to mp3 and use that in ipod. use other software like media monkey to embed artowrk directly in song tags so theres no future issues.

Thanks for all your replies

The main reason I use WAV is because it sounds so much better through my car stereo via my ipod.
But if the APLC format is exactly the same sound wise then I may convert my selection.

So Apple lossless is the same quality as WAV then?

Never used it but, yes, it should be.

It's a lossless CODEC (ie. no actual sound information is removed .... it's only compressed) so should sound identical to the original source. Same with FLAC (but iPods don't support FLAC so thats no use to you) and AIFF but I don't know what sort of tagging (if any) AIFF allows.

MP3, AAC, WMA etc are all lossy format. The file size is smaller as sound data is removed. Not enough to make it unlistenable, but there is a drop in sound quality.
