I presently have a Panasonic X700, which has done me proud for the last couple of years.

It still does pretty much everything that I want from a phone. However, I recently changed my main e-mail account to GoogleMail. Unfortunately, the POP3 and IMAP4 clients in this phone cannot cope with GMail because it requires security ports to be specified and (unless there is something on the phone that I can't see) there is no way that the ports can be specified on the X700. The option just simply isn't there.

It's a real irritation - particularly as my O2 and Orange e-mail accounts can be accessed from the X700's built-in client as they don't require such security settings.

I have thought of moving on and replacing the Panasonic with a Nokia 6290, which also has a Symbian OS (albeit a more recent version).

Can anyone let me know whether there is any way that the security ports can be specified on the X700 that I am simply missing?

Secondly, is it definitely possible to specify the ports using the version of the Symbian 60 OS on the Nokia 6290?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

when you setup the email account you usually end up with the default ports. As you have found out these are incorrect. Once setup however on Nokia S60 phones you can then edit the settings (from the email section of the messaging app). you can then set the incoming and outcoming ports on S60.

Thanks for this. I'm guessing that your instructions only apply to more recent releases of the Symbian 60 OS. I should have made it clearer in my original post that the Panasonic X700 also has the Symbian OS.

I just tried setting it up again to access GMail using IMAP4 and it still wouldn't let me define a port. The only option is to select TLS as the security protocol, or not to use security.

Am I correct in thinking that this means the X700's Symbian OS is too old to have these options, but the Nokia 6290 would likely be OK to access GMail?

Yes that sounds like it simply doesn;t have the options to select the ports. On the any of the newer versions the same page that includes the security settings will also allow you to change the ports too.

The 6290 will certainly have those settings .... quite surprised you can find one of the those though as they didn;t seem to be available for long in the UK.

If your specifically looking for flip phones then the new Nokia 6650 looks awesome (unfortunately only available on T-mobile at the moment though).

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have tried that too to no avail.

I'm on a ludicrously cheap deal from O2 that I keep renewing every year. Plenty of inclusive calls and some texts, but no facility for a GPRS or 3G data connection - hence I rely upon WAP to send and receive basic e-mail. Unfortunately, the GMail application doesn't seem to run without a fixed data connection.

I may have another go with it at some point, though, and see if I may be wrong.

Thanks again. Being on O2, the 6650 is unlikely to be an option. However, I found the forthcoming 6655 on Nokia's website and it looks pretty similar (and rather smart).
