Hey there, I've been offered a second hand 2G Iphone for £150. Apparently the phone is unlocked and jailbroken (don't know what this means though). I am planning on using my current O2 Pay as you go SIM card in the phone which the seller assures me will work no problem.

I have a couple of questions:

- He says it has the most up to date firmware, if a new update comes out, will I be able to accept it or will this restore original settings and lock the phone?

- Would I be able to use the internet (wi-fi) service on the phone?

- Transferring tracks/ringtones etc from itunes onto the phone wouldn't be an issue, would it?

- I would be able to text Multimedia messages without any difficulties yeah?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure that I am able to fully use the phone before committing to buying it.

I appreciate any help. Thanks.

you can use your o2 pay and go sim and this type of arrangement is anticipated and approved by o2 (http://service.o2.co.uk/IQ/SRVS/CGI-...E=13373,T=Case)

yes, a future software update might relock the phone to o2, but since you are planning to use an 02 pay and go sim this should not affect you. if you want it to remain unlocked do not update the software or reactivate with the pay and go sim.

wifi and music syncing are features of the phone, but mms is not.

Specifically though, because the phone is being used as pay as you go, will the wifi service still be available? I mean, normally on contract I understand that you pay a special tarriff, would my use on wifi just come off my balance? Say for example I had £10 balance on my phone, and I spent 15 mins on wifi, my balance would just be detracted to (hypothetically) £6?

Also, just to clarify...what does jailbroken mean?

oh i see, you mean the access to cloud and bt wifi.

if you follow the the instructions on the o2 website you can sign up to the web and wifi bolt on for iphone for £10 per month. this will give you web browsing over GPRS/EDGE and cloud/bt wifi.

if you don't take that bolt on, there isn't any method for you to access any paid for wifi services via 02 so there wouldn't be any deductions. you can, of course, use open wifi connections, your own wifi or sign up to some other service.

jailbreaking adapts the phone's software and is used primarily to give users the ability to add third party applications; it is not such a big deal any more as apple are now offering users third part applications for their app store.

Jailbroken - Can install unauthorised applications

Unlocked - Can be used on any network, or any O2 tarrif.

You can use WIFI on the device, but if you're using a WIFI hotspot that requires payment, you'll need to make your own arrangements to pay for it. This includes the Cloud.

If there are firmware updates, they may brick your phone and you will need to avoid doing them until the folks that unlock and jailbreak phones fix it so that the updated firmware will work.

Also your iPhone is not covered by any waranty or guarantee. that was voided when it was jailbroken and Unlocked.

Right that's cleared quite a lot of my concerns up. Thanks a lot. Sorry if I continue to sound like a complete moron, but my own wifi in my flat I will be able to use at no extra cost? Also, if I was in like Costa or Mcdonalds or somewhere that has wifi available, this would also cost nothing as it would be detected by the Iphone?

My understanding is that I would only have to get the £10 bolt on if I wanted to use the wifi when there's no hotspot available? In which case I probably wouldn't bother as would only want to use it in my flat, in airports, train stations etc.

I'll reiterate my appreciation of the help being provided. I'm a total newbie to the advancements in mobile technology and not entirely sure how it all works.

don't know about costa, but mcdonalds is free.

you'd probably have to pay at most hotspots.

And the bolt-on gives you free internet usage over GPRS and EDGE too, otherwise you'll be charged for the data you use when not connected to a WiFi hotspot.

I have used the mcdonalds wifi and basically theres a free register bit on the (looking at the screen) left hand menu you just enter your postcode and I think your name (I cant remember been a while) and when thats done you can freely use the wifi

i had to put my post code in as well on my hacked iphone. i think the entering of phone numbers is for the cloud wifi included in the o2 tariff.

Hi i would just like to add to this because im pretty much in the same boat and any advice is much appreciated. I'm running a 2g Iphone on version 1.1.4 its been jailbroken and unlocked. Now a friend of mine reckons the new 2.0.1 update will allow any 02 sim card to be used on the handset now. As im on 02 pay and go I don't mind it locking the phone to only O2 and as stated above im not to fussed about it being jailbroken anymore as apps are being made avaliable on the itunes store. What i wanted to know was if i update my phone will it 'brick it' (this is a term im not to familiar with) what does that mean exactly?

I just want to be able to update my phone to 2.0.1 so i can update the APN settings and use the web and wifi bolt on on my pay and go sim. 02 seem to think that my phone will not be blocked if i do the update only locked to O2 which again is fine.

So can someone please tell me in no uncertain terms as to whether or not updating my firmware from 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 on my 2g iphone that is unlocked and jailbroken will render it useless? What state will it be left in? If its just locked to O2 and not jailbroken anymore i can live with that. But if it will lock the phone and not even allow my pay and go sim to work (is this what bricked means) then i'd like to know.

Sorry for the long thread! Thank you in advance!
