I have been to a million Chinese, Indian and Italian places but one cuisine I have yet to sample is French. I have had a look at Café Rouge's menu and it looks a good place to start. I would love to try Boeuf Bourguignon and onion soup.

Do you recommend Café Rouge?

Whole-heartedly!! I have never had a bad experience at Cafe Rouge. We have several here in deepest Surrey - and i can thoroughly recommend the one in Weybridge along the Queens Road.

Their house White is wonderful and always served well chilled, and it's very moor-ish... you've been warned!!

Food wise, i love the Tarte Alsace and the Toulouse Sausage with mash is pretty wonderful as well.

And - it won't leave a too big a dent on your Credit Card either..... unless of course you go over the top with the wine!!

Go.... enjoy!!

I have to say I have had a variety of experiences in Cafe Rouge ranging from excellent to abysmal - I think it depends on the branch that you go to. I would avoid Putney as that was the worst ever although it may have just been a bad day.

The best mid range French restaurant I know in London is La Bouchee in Kensington - not the cheapest but very good and full of French people which is always a good sign. Excellent chips!

Avoid! They rip-off their staff by using the service charge to pay the wages

I have eaten at a local one on a few occasions and found the food to be pretty good and the staff friendly and attentive.

Cafe Rouge is mediocre - not terrible but not very good either. You can do a lot better if you want to try some good French food.

The staff aren't forced to work there though are they?

Cafe Rouge is Ok, it's not amazing, but they do decent meals most of the time.

Ive always found the Weybridge branch good too , except my last visit about 6 weeks ago , the whole meal was appalling! Has anybody been recently? wondering if they have got round to changing the chef , then I might be tempted back.

For a quick snack I suppose Rouge is ok but a chain is a chain. If you're ever in London, go to Savoire Fayre in Bloomsbury. Tis amazing authentic french food, and cheap.

I have always had nice experiences at Cafe Rouge. I goto the Canterbury Branch quite regularly. The only trouble is that by the time I arrive there, all of the specials are gone!!!

I often have steak and frites (with Roquefort sauce), and also the Croque Monsieur, and the French Onion soup. I have tried the Beef Bourguignon and it was nice.

Id never order the specials, isnt it just the old food that is near its sell by date that they are trying to get rid of?

I've not been to the Weybridge one for about 18 months or so.... so things may have changed....

We used to go to Cafe Rouge all the time. I have not been for years.

Are they a franchise? Am I imagining it, or did many close at one point?

I don't like Cafe Rouge. They do main meals for anorexics. For the pudding, they gave too much cheese. They need to work more on the portion control and make it even!

I like to have a boozy late lunch at our local one in Didsbury. The wine is chilled and reasonable and they do a great whole baked camambert

I always give my tip straight to the waiter / waitress.

I love Cafe Rouge. Their steak baguette is to die for and the full English breakfast is excellent and delicious.

I've been to the cafes in Windsor, St Albans and Hertford and have never had a bad meal or bad service.

They attempted a 're-vamp' a few years ago, getting rid of the odd light shades and wall writing and generally going for a little more of an upmarket look, but their customers said that they actually preferred their 'old look' and they promptly went back to how they were originally. I think a few of the restaurants did close down, but the one in Weybridge is still there... i drive past it every evening.

The one at Canary Wharf looks nice. I will probably give it a go when I am next in London.

Can anyone tell me if the Boeuf Bourguignon is nice and tender normally? Or is it a bit chewy?

It might be. Alternatively it could be food they've got a good deal on, or food that is of a particularly good quality. That's how a lot of restaurants work.
