Has anybody been out for meal and really enjoyed and sent their compliments to the chef via the waiting staff? Have you had a response?

I was watching Celebrity Masterchef last night and on a couple of occasions the waiting staff came in and said something along the lines of the customer on table 5 sends his complements to the chef for the excellent fish. I have had some wonderful meals and never thought to do this but it must make them feel good when it happens. I am quick to complain if it is bad but maybe I should give more praise where it's due as well.

I haven't recently (have had nice meals but haven't actually sent my compliments ) but in Majorca last year we did.

The restaurant was new, only in its second week. We were so impressed we asked the couple that ran it to thank the chef but as the place was quite empty she bought the chef up and we all had a drink together.... went back a few more times and on our last evening the chef made us a meal that wasn't even on the menu - bless!!!

Needless to say he was left a hefty tip!

I used to be a grill chef at a Berni Inn many moons ago. It was an open kitchen and we were very close to the customers. We didn't get tips, just a murmured thanks sometimes. We were very grateful on the rare occasions someone sent over a pint as it was bloody hot in front of those grills! It always struck us that although the waitresses didn't share their tips with us, they wouldn't have got them in the first place if we weren't doing the food right.
So yes, every time i've had a nice meal I make a point of asking the waiting staff to thank the chef and put a drink behind the bar for him.

I was in a recently opened Thai Resturant in Headlingley a few weeks ago and the chef came out to speak to people so I took the chance to tell her just how wonderful we thought the food had been, first class.

Sukhothai, I can 100% recommend it.

My partner and I ate out at a local pub last night and for dessert he had the best treacle tart and homemade vanilla ice cream he had ever tasted and did send his compliments to the chef

First time he's ever done that!

I have sent compliments to the chef via the waiting staff, but it was on the way out of the restaurant. I didn't expect a response.

In my experience of being a waiter we were usually too busy to pass on compliments to the chef, or the chefs were often arseholes who you didn't converse with unless absolutely necessary

I went to a Michelin Restaurant and asked them to compliment the pastry Chef on the Dessert. He sent out a plate of Chocolates with Thank You written on it in Chocolate.

I've not only complimented the staff on their service and food, I have also been complimented by customers.

When I worked in Callander, Perthshire; there was one time during a bank holiday. Extremely busy night and I had messed up one of the orders, basically over cooked the gammon steak. Was sent back and redone, which was sent out and given the complement that it was the best Gammon Steak they had ever had. Mind you I get complements from my wife all the time, but then she is biased

I've worked on and off for years in restaurants and loads of people pass on their compliments to the chef.
If you are going to do this, do it early in evening, if you got a late booking, save your breath, by the time you finished your main, the chef has left or doesnt care (they truly are a rare breed).

And don't ever ever ask for a recipe. the derision that request is met with is unbelievable and honestly not worth putting the poor waiting staff through.
