I am using one of those home distribution units that has various inputs - FM, UHF, DAB...

If I use all those inputs (I do actually have the relevant roof aerials) is it essential to use a splitter plate in every room I distribute to, including rooms I only want to watch TV and not bother with a hifi?

No, the TV will reject the FM anyway, the splitter (more correctly called a diplexer) is just if you want to feed both.
