Excuse me for being thick but what is the point of an HDMI connector on an amp?

AIUI for me anyway the HDMI would connect from Sky HD box to telly, and Sky HD optical out to HT amp.

No amp HDMI used. Or can you connect Sky HD HDMI to HT amp HDMI?

A lot of people use video switching or conversion on the amp and these days HDMI is the connection method so they have to support the format.

The rest of use will probably be using a HDMI box to a HDMI telly and a digital audio link to the amp for 5.1 etc but modern amps give flexibility which makes them better for some people.

With quite a few things now coming with HDMI connections & some TV's only having 1 HDMI socket it's just a simple single connection to hook up to the TV, then the remaing HDMI's into the AV kit. This can work very well for HD DVD & Blu ray as the new HD sound formats can be passed via the HDMI connection, unfortunately Sky HD does not have the facility to pass sound this way so IMO it's better to go straight to the TV or it's HDMI + Optical to the AV Amp.

Any decent HT amp will have optical or coaxial inputs for Dolby sound, it's far more common that way than via HDMI which mostly carries just stereo.

Some HT amps won't even pass any sound at all via HDMI, not even the stereo sound from the source - been caught by that before!
