I have the old faithful - but am hearing a few things like the 3G support on o2 isn't too good and apart from the bigger memory I'm wondering whether it's worth upgrading.

Not least of all cos mine has a nice metal back!

I suspect that people wouldn't actually admit to it.

Just got mine and I loved my old original iphone (I had the 8gb and sold it for the 16gb original) now I am with the 16gb 3g iphone and it just feels better in the hand. I really like it.

The 3G coverage is poor. I would recomend you test a 3G O2 phone where you work and live before upgrading.
They rolled out EDGE specifically after the original iPhone launch, so I'm hoping the launch of the 3G one will spur them into expanding/improving their 3G coverage.

That being said I would say the GPS, improved audio and earphone jack are also worth considering, as well as the extra storage of course.

thanks guys!

I'm sure I will upgrade eventually

in terms of the 3G - does it default back to edge if there is 'none' around

or can you ask it to if it's less than 2 bars or something?

Friend of mine upgraded to a 3G iPhone. Quickly became evident that the 3G access was just crap. He could barely get one bar on the strength meter, even when close to a O2 mast. To do anything with it, he had to turn off the 3G and rely on EDGE.

Now whether that's because the iPhone has crap 3G reception, or whether it's O2's 3G coverage that's crap here (Nottingham), we don't know. But whatever, it was pointless upgrading.

However, he still came out of it okay as he decided to keep his old iPhone, and sell the new one on eBay for 400 quid. Which was fine by him cos the old one 'feels' nicer anyway.

It's all made me think twice about whether I want one.

It should default to whatever the best network near you is, if thats 3g, it will be 3g, its its edge, it will be edge, if its GPRS, it will be GPRS.

If you want to though, you can turn off 3g on the phone itself and keep to just 2G.

It didn't do that with my mate's. While ever it could get 1 bar on 3G, it would always try to use that. But being that weak of a signal, it was completely unusable. The only way he could get any decent reliability was to turn off 3G completely. Which kind of defeated the object of having one.

Exactly the case. But people did buy it knowing that O2's 3G coverage was the worst of the 5.

I have sent mine back because the ability to connect to 3G is appalling. I am what could be described as an Apple fanboy-every product I have previously bought is first class.
I live in an area supposed to have good 3G coverage. In the first few days it showed a 3G signal four times. I spent hours updating the software etc to no avail. I have visited numerous forums, this is the same all over the world-just look at the posts on Apple Forums.
I was in the O2 shop in Bournemouth yesterday and not one of the 3G iphones was getting a 3G signal just inside the door!
They were selling new stock as fast as they could-I discreetly asked one of the staff about 3G issues and he denied any knowledge of it and Apple are the same, which is incredible.
Also check the coverage area for O2 3G and you will see it is the worst of any network, this on top of the low signal on the iphone anyway.

Haven't really tested it anywhere apart from home yet, but I get a full 3G signal sitting at my desk:

I'm very happy with it overall. The GPS seems to work very well - I tested it in the car last night, and it streamed the mapping data over 3G with no problems as the car moved. Also, the call quality is incredible - I had a call from work yesterday, and it really, really impressed me.
The only criticism at the moment would be the colour - it's a fingerprint magnet!

All hype, have better things to waste money on.

I'm keeping my original for now. 3G and GPS alone aren't worth using up my upgrade for the next eighteen months (particularily given the horribly shaped ugly plastic back of the 3G).

OFCOM was very concerned about O2 coverage http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/news/2008/05/nr_20080502a

Of course, you then have the hassle of getting the photos off. As my iPhone is linked to my MBP, I can't hook up the Mac at work to get them.. and you have no file transfer/mass storage mode.. and there's no 'send via Bluetooth' option either.

In the end, I'm uploading images by email (one at a time) to a gallery on MobileMe.

I love the iPhone, but there are so many things I also hate!! It's as if Apple though that having the best UI (and it's probably one of the best) allows you to go back in time on other things. I mean, Bluetooth has had file transfer capabilities since ratification back in 2000. Even PCs can do it now.

why don't you email them to yourself?

If you jail break its even easier. Just open up and Explorer like window (winscp) and browse to the directory and hit copy!

Just connect the iPhone via USB and open up Image Capture.

I don't regret my purchase, but there are definitely a few annoyances - battery life is a big issue and plenty of UI slowdown, especially on SMS which will hopefully be sorted by an OS update. Safari's not 100% stable and 3g speeds aren't blowing me away. On the whole I wouldn't change my purchase, but it isn't perfect.
