Blink - Overrated Tosh or Modern Masterpiece.

I'd like to start by saying that Blink is my all time favourite episode of Doctor Who. It has so many strengths which includes the lack of screen time for The Doctor. That turned out to be a real strength. It gave more time for Sally Sparrow's character to grow and develop.

Some say there was a lack of action in the episode but that for me is irrelevant. Doctor Who isn't all action and extermination. This episode was about time lines and as we all know the "wibbly wobbly timey wimey" nature of time.

Isn't it funny how the story seems to start at the actual end of the show? Sally Sparrow gives The Doctor all the information he needs to eventually save sally from the Weeping Angels. Starting by putting the writing on the wall of the Wester Drumlins abandoned house for Sally Sparrow to follow. Incidentally, The Doctor doesn't know Sally at this point.

Anyway, Sally goes back to the house with her friend Kathy Nightingale to investigate the stone statues that were there. Who would have thought a group of statues would create so much fear? Kathy didn't make it out alive. Well technically she did, but back in 1920 never to live again in her own time. So sally of course has to go back and tell brother Larry about what happened to his sister. But can she? Of course not. How do you tell someone their sister has been thrown back in time and you'll never seem them again. There follows one of the funniest scenes in the episode. But one thing still bugs Sally, is who is the man in the DVD who has been following her around and just how is he able to seemingly follow Sallys words and movements. "Spooky isn't it?"

Prompted by a chance clue from a nerdy shopkeeper, Sally shoots off to the police to get information on the abandoned house. There she meets D.I. Billy Shipton. And well to cut a long story short there, Sally becomes the object of his attraction and they swap phone numbers. But Billy didn't bank on a visit from the Angels to come into the bargain and has been thrown back to 1969.. There he meets The Doctor Who who is also stuck in 1969. In the midst of all the headaches, the wibbly wobby, The Technobabble , The Doctor, who is still missing his TARDIS, needs something from Billy. A message to give to Sally Sparrow. What's this? The Doctor knows Sally Sparrow? You get the feeling this is so but Sally doesn't know any Doctor and certainly doesn't know identity of the man behind the DVD Easter egg. - Yet.

So poor Billy. Has a chip on his shoulder now and a change of career path. Publishing, then video publishing and then DVD... well you get the idea now. The Doctor records the DVD he needs to with the said information given to him by Sally Sparrow. Yes I know Sally hasn't given him said information yet but bear with me.

When it is time Billy makes that phone call and arranges to meet Sally.

Back to the house Sally goes and there for the first time Sally and The Doctor carry out their full conversation which powers Sally with all the information she needs get to the Blue Box and return it to the Doctor. And as it happens Larry is just the kind of nerd the world needs to complete the transcript with Sally's words which would later be given to the Doctor. But suddenly, the DVD ends. There's a chill in the air and their own their own. It's time for a spot of weeping angel dodging. With the key in their hand, and the angels after them. All they need to do is get inside the Blue Box. But someone turns out the lights....

Alright i'll stop there. I suppose the reason i babbled on like this is to help everyone see just why I think the episode is action packed. It's a classic example of wibbly wobbly timey wimey. Sally's adventure is all over, yet The Doctor's is about to give in. I think we saw the Angels at just the right times. To overdo them would just spoil the effect of what was otherwise the scariest ever baddies in Doctor Who.

It was my least favourite. It was like Doctor Who goes to Highgate and does not appear much.

Just like Turn Left and Love and Monsters. But like I say it was one of the great strengths of Blink that the doctor took a back seat.

I thought it was brilliant, very suspenseful and didn't suffer from being Doctor-lite.

this is a genuinely original episode..........one of the best parts of "NEW WHO"...........well written & in the best traditions of the old series, while standing alone in the modern era

A truly unique episode, I really enjoyed it! It seemed like a little movie in itself. And a horror movie at that... some parts of it really scared me!
I loved the character Sally Sparrow, it didn't bother me that it was a doctor lite episode but to be fair I haven't really watched a lot of doctor who at all, just afew of the first episodes of the first season, a few with Martha in it and all of the ones with Catherine Tate in it.
So i can't really compare it to many other episodes, but as a newbie i enjoyed it!

As off Doctor Lite episodes, Turn left beats it by a million miles!

While I enjoyed it, something about it really annoyed me: the fact that in singing Blink's praises and going on about it as God's gift to Doctor Who, people immediately seemed to forget Human Nature, which came before it and to me was by far the superior story.

It is my favourite episode and I will always watch it if it is repeated. I speak as someone who watched every Doctor Who episode up until the middle of the most recent series, and then just lost interest and found greater appeal in Dads Army re-runs on BBC2 - sorry if this is sacrilege to some posters here!

But Blink - classic episode!

I loved Blink...and for me it was very Doctor Whoish (if there is such a word that is) even with the lack of the Doctor....and it was the best story/episode for me since New Who began...untill Midnight that is....for me that has got to be the best...because it was very very different...and took the Doctor to a whole new experience....one which he probably never wants to go throgh ever again....

Turn Left Owns Blink by a million miles That is all =D

It's certainly over-rated. But that's only because of the hyperbole with which fans appear to inject their opinions at the moment.

"I liked that" becomes "that was the bestest thing in the history of everything EVER!" because those who like an episode somehow feel they have to compensate for those who didn't.

And, on the other side of the coin, "I didn't enjoy bits of that" becomes "that was the worstest thing in the history of everything EVER! And anyone who disagrees obviously just doesn't have any critical faculties and is just not as intelligent as ME!"

(Normally expressed more vigourously than the positive side of things as these posters tend to know they're in a TINY minority but feel that shouting loudly validates their opinion, especially if they can "intellectually" dismiss the opposing viewpoint by (mis)using terms like "Deus Ex Machina," which they've heard at some point but obviously have no idea what it actually means.)

I liked Turn Left... I liked Blink...

But Midnight knocks them both into a cocked hat. Or a hatful of cocks. Whichever is more appropriate.

I like "Blink" but I didn't think it was THAT brilliant!

But then that's my opinion.

I've watched Blink several times now and I just can't get into it. My unpopular opinion is not just that the episode is over rated but also that Sally Sparrow is over rated and has been completely glorified by DS forum posters. She was a nice enough one off character but nothing more.

Modern Masterpiece scary Dr Who at its best. I felt like I did when I was a kid when Dr Who scared me.
