Thinking of getting a new digital camera...

... and I'd just like some advice/recommendations.

I currently have the Samsung Digimax S500 (5.1MP).

I mainly use it for gigs/concerts and for photos of friends & family. I'm not looking to pay over the odds (no more than £200, and that's pushing it) as I don't use it every day, but when I do, I want it to be really good.

I think the main priority is to have a really great zoom, so good that when you do zoom in a lot, the quality doesn't get worse.

I've been looking at the Sony Cybershots... any good? Any other advice would be appreciated.

I've got a brand new konica minolta 8.1MP going spare for less than £100 if you're interested.
PM me if you are.

I'm thinking of going with the Sony Cyber-Shot W170... any opinions on this, please?

Steves digicam is a really good website I second that, really good place to check out reviews. Check out the forums too as I've always found people their to be really helpful and they usually post photos to show what the quality is like.

If your main factor is zoom, like it was with myself, then have a look at the bridge style digital cameras. I got the Panasonic DMC-FZ18 which has an 18 X OPTICAL zoom and it is out of this world.

Their are also options from Olympus and Canon.

You can however also get a more portable, smaller version of a large zoom digi cam from say Panasonic. Have a look at the DMC-TZ3/4/5 which all have a 10 X OPTICAL zoom.

I myself having already bought the FZ18 am intending to buy the TZ4 or 5 at the end of this month.

I highly rate all of the aforementioned Panasonic models. They even have a great image stabilisation system for helping you out with camera shake.

the website is : UKCamerastore

I'll link you to the website I bought mine from purely because it is the cheapest place I have found to buy the cameras I have been looking at.

and I realise this was first posted in July but the OP hasn't come back to post whether they got anything so may still be looking

I recently purchased a TZ5 but ended up sending it back.
It is a fantastic looking camera, well built, quite heavy for such a small point & shoot but I wasn't really happy with the picture quality and the lack of any manual overides bugged me.
That will teach me to do my homework better!!
