I'm looking for a suitable car charger and cradle for the iPhone 3g anyone know of any? The charger has to be for 3g as apple have changed which pins charge the iPhone on the dock connector apparently! Is there any cradles with an intergrated dock connector for charging? I have seen a car charger for iPhone on play.com (sorry can't paste link, I'm on my iPhone) for 3.49 Inc. P+P does anyone know if this will work with the 3g? Anyone tried it?

I've been looking into a similar same issue, but a charger only.

Received wisdom seems to be to buy a car charger which has a USB socket on it. This means that you can charge your iPhone, or any other device for which you can get a USB cable with a standard USB plug at one end.

The Griffin Powerjolt SE is one such charger and it comes with an iPhone lead. Someone on Apple iPhone 3G support forum has one and has confirmed it works with the 3G.

I ordered it from here for just over a tenner including shipping.

thanks for the replies,

has anyone got the Gomadic charger &/or mount (see link)? Bearing in mind what the above poster has said, can anyone recommend the supplied charger? as you can buy the mount without charger from Amazon for £18 then could buy the Griffin PowerJolt SE seperate for just over £10 (inc. p+p) (or £25 with Gomadic car charger)

Hi There,

On my 3rd car charger.

1st was a Griffin Powerjolt SE, just fell out of the ciggy lighter hole in the dash board, the springs down the side are weak.

2nd from Maplin, that one doesn’t work with ip[hone 3G. Works with any other usb but not 3G.

New one ordered from
http://www.blueunplugged.com/p.aspx?p=115547

We shall see if this one works when it arrives. The price was Right

Will keep u posted

Hi,
3rd one going back, don't think any one's realized that they charge in a different way to just about all other iphone/pods.

Any one had any luck in finding a car charger that works with iPhone 3G?

Help

The griffin one from Carphone Warehouse works, as will any cigarette power adaptor that provides a USB socket. Just use the cable that came with your 3G iPhone.

My griffin one doesn't have any problems with springs and falling out of the lighter socket!

looking around the internet i've seen two reasons why some chargers won't change the iphone 3G

1. The pins that charge the iphone on the dock connector have changed, apple have dropped the firewire ipod cable, so some pins have changed in operation

2. apple software can determine (I'm not exactly sure how) if accessories are genuine "Made for iPod" accessories or not, if not then they won't work

So cheap accessories from China aren't likely to work due to these reasons, most accessories from reputable companies are "Made for iPod" however, and 'should' work, providing they are suitable for iPhone 3G (due to iPod Dock connector pin changes)!

Apparently Apple did tell manufactures that the firewire cable was being discontinued, and would no longer be supported, but some manufactures still made products that worked the 'old way' and not the 'new way', thats why some old chargers (and new) wont charge some new apple products, e.g. iPhone 3G

I'm still after a suitable cradle if anyone can recommend one?

I gave up with my previous car cradle. Ive got one of those bury car kits which are good as you just need a new faceplate if you change phone.

The one i had for my first iPhone doesnt fit the new 3g one, as apple have made the new 3g iphone slightly thicker.

Well i tried to rub down the plastic and it didnt work so i just gave up.

Does anyone know if you can get 3g compatible cradles yet?

I ended up buying the griffin powerjolt from amazon for £10 and got a 'iphone' cradle from CPW for £10 also

Both seem to work well! Let's c how the cradle stands up to motorway journeys though, seems to tackle speed bumps at 30 mph fine tho!!
