Glynn Purnell's restaurant

Hi all

I'm hoping on the fact that some of you in here also saw Great British Menu a couple of months back with the fantastic Glynn Purnell.

Well, my o/h mentioned at the time that he would love to go to Glynn Purnell's restaurant as it's not too far away from us so I have managed to book a table for us and some of his friends but I wondered if anyone had been and what they thought of it?

Haven't been to Purnell's, but went to Jessica's when he was Head Chef and it had a Michelin star. Be prepared for rather strange food, if you're adventurous you'll love it, but if you're a Steak & Chips kind of person you might not. I had his Beef in Liquorice and it was truly amazing.

I'm throwing out all food 'fussiness' for the evening and will be really going for the unusual because if we're going to splash out I want to really experience it properly. The one thing I'm a bit worried about is how formal to dress, sounds silly but I don't want to overdo it but also don't want to look a scruff as usual!

Really nice to hear from someone who has experienced the chief's cooking though, cheers Tommy.

It won't be that formal, but then i wouldn't turn up in jeans and trainers (even though they would let you in probably).

Let me know what it's like because we're planning a visit soon too.

Well Tommy, my advice would be to book a table now! We were really lucky that as a group of 8 we were given the private dining room for our meal which was really special. The staff were absolutely wonderful, I cannot compliment them enough, and the food was nothing like I have ever tasted before! So many flavours and despite what looked like quite small portions we all left feeling very full.

The bill for 8 of us came to around £550 although we are not big drinkers so only had the one bottle of wine (one of the cheaper ones on the extensive menu!).

The restaurant Manager gave us a quick tour of the restaurant and the kitchen after everyone had left and was really happy to chat to us about the restaurant and their plans for a glass room for a new chef's table at the begining of next year.

I'm certainly no expert on restaurants at this level but I was really impressed and would definitely think about going again for a special occasion

Just came across this post as I was searching for this restaurant to leave a positive comment.

I went there earlier this week - what an amazing experience, so many fantastic flavours - everything I had I thought 'that's not going to work' but it all worked sooo well.

Everything from the 'amuse bouche' cucumber sorbet with ras al hanout (which was wonderful) through the 3 courses to the dark chocolate coated peanut butter balls and the glorious cassis jelly with marshmallow with the coffee at the end of the meal was superb.

Leave your 'food prejudices' at home and go with an open mind and you'll be very, very happy!

I was unsure when I went to Jessica's (Glyn's previous restaurant) but we had the most amazing Melon and Feta Cheese soup. Sounds gross, was beautiful.
