What purpose does she serve apart from playing the self-righteous agony aunt for all the Street's whingers? Is it just that the producers can't afford the severance pay she would claim?

What about Betty, Emily bishop, Blanche?
Can't remember a decent storyline involving these characters

I think you can make an exception with Blanche... she played a really good character when she was with Archie, and then with Wally.... She is more useful than Betty and Emily though...

its called polysemia

reaching all levels of audience.

Coronation Street is not like Hollyoaks, its format has worked for years and will always remain. Its the longest running serial - something must be right for it to be the success it is.

Look at Brookie - introducing loads - and I mean loads - of new characters. Now its dying on its back.

Exactly, she's not annoying like all the bitchy whinging women on the channel 4 soaps. Honestly I swear after watching Hollyoaks you really could start to hate women quite seriously.
People like familiar faces.

If youre going to question practices on soaps, question the ones that don't work.

Besides, everyone needs to make money and obviously her small parts are enough for her.

And she's one of the highest paid members of the cast along with Jonny Briggs.... Although they did suffer a pay cut sometime last year didn't they?!

...if not the highest paid. I've never worked that one out - why not Bill Roache? He's been there the longest.

Bill Roache needs the money from what my mum has told me! Yeah she is a highly paid character who isn't involved in many storylines, but she is a link to the shows past and if you remove the golden oldies if you like of the show, they will loose yet more viewers.

I do like Rita, but they're definitely wasting her...she's due a storyline now. I think the last one of note was with that boyfriend of hers and his wife
Same with Emily, but to be fair she HAS been involved in more this year than for many years previously, what with the Richard Hillman thing.

Someone has to have big orange hair

Seriously though running the newsagent's provides a few comedy moments with Norris The shop itself is a place where characters come and trade gossip so you learn what's happening in various storylines and Corrie does need to retain some of the older characters to balance out the younger ones. Like someone else said, it isn't Hollyoaks

Reality Check: In real life a lot of people tend to live in their houses for a long time when they get older, so how can you expect all of these loved charachters to leave. They can only get killed off and it would seem completely unreal if they all suddenly died.

Thing is tho, they had their chance when Richard Hillman was in it, they could have used this to their advantage...

nah.... would have been brill. I remember when it was in the paper that he was going to take another victim that night - but who? Work was buzzing, the pub was buzzing. It was great.

Chile, Miss Rita is a legend. All these young broads come and go but Miss Rita stays and shows her true class. Bill has been there longest but boo, that guy should be on his knees praying to God that they did not kick him to the kerb years ago. He is a mediocre actor who lucked out. Preach!

Rita, Blanche (currently missing? ) and Emily are in the street becuase in real life, elderly people still exist.

Corrie is not a children's show, if it were, it would be full of storylines based on the vile Webster kids and teenage tantrums.

Try Grange Hill if you want juvenile storylines. Suppose you think Ena and Hilda were boring too, because they weren't up the stick every few months.

No actually i don't , but i suppose you would rather listen to betty goin on about hotpots:yawn: and rita moaning about someone on inkerman st not payin their paper bill:yawn: , than watch some other character involved in a really good storyline
