Having now got myself an iphone on O2 (a network that actually seems to work!), I now need to cancel my Vodafone contract.

A quick Google seatch for the number reveals you have to put it in writing these days?

Is this the case?

The address I found was:
Vodafone Disconnection Department
Vodafone Ltd
PO Box 549
Banbury
Oxon
OX17 3ZJ

specify if you need a PAC (Porting Authorisation Code)
if the account has a password, please quote this in the letter.

When I phoned them for a PAC code they said that once O2 carry out the move they will bill me for what I owe and close account. This was confirmed in the PAC letter that I received from them.

Instead of going to all tha the hassle of writing etc, just pic up a free sim from somewhere, ask vodafone for your pac code and port that number over to the old sim, the contract will end the minute the switch over takes place and they will bill you for whatever you owe them up to that point. Far cheaper and quicker than giving 30 days notice etc.

Yeah thats really the idea, but the op said he'd already got his new phone etc, so guessed he wasnt worried about keeping the number.

Even if you do that you'll be charged for the whole 30 days regardless ...
