I bought that same machine from ASDA back in January for £179.99 (I think!) and it's been fine for me. Pretty decent as a DVD recorder and it's pretty typical for playing videos (ie. it's not as good as VCRs from 15 years ago, but that goes for all current VCRs).
It's very easy to use for transfering from DVD-VHS or VHS-DVD. I would therefore recommend it.
It also has recording modes for 1hr, 2hr, 2hr20, 4hr and 6hr for DVD recordings, but you usually get about 5% more than that.

Oh and at least with Asda if it starts playing up then it would be pretty easy to return it for a refund, I would imagine.

You won't be able to copy commercial protected VHS recordings to DVD. But you may have found that out by now.
