I love M & S food; mum shops there regularly and I think the sandwiches have to be my favourites, they have some unusual combinations! You have to get there quite early though, as they sell out really quickly. I also love their bread (less stodgy than Sainsbury's) and cakes. Even though they're a bit pricey, I think it's worth it for the quality and we hardly ever throw any away!

I wouldn't do a full shop there but if I'm passing, I will call in for certain food favourites.

M&S is the only supermarket near where I work so I'll often pop in there for bits and pieces but I'd never do a food shop there!
When I can afford to pay those prices to do a weekly shop (IE after payday ) I go to Waitrose

Their "Gastro Pub" range is lovely, and I like the fresh Microwave Meals too. |

M&S food seems very overated to me - Waitrose stuff generally seems better if I compare the two.

I used to do my weekly shopping there for about a year but I got bored of the stuff because there is not that much choice. All of their stuff is bloody good though. The Belgian (or are they Dutch?) shortbread bisuits dipped in chocolate are to die for. And I love the fresh ready meals. Oh, and their frozen chips are the BEST!

M+S food has seriously gone downhill over the last few years.
I get the impression a lot of it is made to a budget and does not have the standout quality that it had a few years ago. The likes of Tesco Finest have pretty much closed the quality gap nowadays |

The likes of Tesco Finest have pretty much closed the quality gap nowadays And yes, their food is ridiculously over-priced. What's all this nonsense around a meal for two for a tenner? Is that supposed to be good value? I'd rather cook myself and spend the remaining £6 on a decent bottle of wine. Another 'and yes' in agreement with an earlier poster, the portions can be on the skimpy side. Years ago as a student, I worked in a huge distribution place that solely supplied M & S. I was stunned to discover that M & S sold loo roll and other household stuff...at daft prices. Stunned too, to realise that they would only be selling it if people were buying it. Some people really do have more money than sense. Either that or they're living in 'curtains and kippers' land. I do buy some of their stuff when it's on offer and therefore reasonably priced, but otherwise, I reckon you may as well eat out. The cost won't be much different and you won't have to wash up. |

Its worth remembering Northern Foods make most of M&S's ready meals - and Northern Foods also make ready meals for many other supermarkets who sell these things at a lesser cost!

M and S are starting to sell other brands in some shops- heinz beans and ariel washing powder etc so they must be trying to attract a wider market. I wouldn't shop there very often becasue of the limited range and the confusing layout of the local store but the gastro range ready meals is gorgeous. The Moussaka is amzing

Many of their ready meals are very good which along with their bread and snacks is about all we buy there and way better than Waitrose.

One of the most frustrating places to shop. The bread is often at or just before its best-by date, they manage to run of of things very early in the day (usually wholemeal bread, muffins, rolls etc), their products are often ridiculously overpackaged (cheese in shrink-wrap inside a cardboard box) and their range of vegetarian food has shrunk over the years.
Some of their stuff is great: the little meze-style pastries and salads are delicious but hideously expensive. Their traditional soft drinks are much better tasting than other supermarket drinks (the ginger beer is delicious). We're getting a new, smallish Waitrose soon and hopefully that will give M&S a bit of competition and mean they keep their shelves a bit fuller in future. |

I love M&S food, although i havent been there for many years now.
When i worked in London i would often pop into the one on Eastcheap and buy some dinner for the evening. Its a tempting shop though, with way too many offers !!! I loved the tubs they did with mini chocolate brownies and flapjack. Scrummy. |

I shop there every week but dont do a full shop as i like other brands for stuff liek Heinz Beans, HP Sauce, Kleenex etc but it is way too expensive - even a smallish basket costs about £30! Have to agree, a lot the other supermarkets seem to have raised their game and manage to be much more competitively priced.

someones just posted something quite intresting on my M&S Swiss Milk Choc review ... bassically saying about how different manufactures produce the products for retailers like M&S...
now im aware that M&S buy in their frozen foods from some of the company but what does everyone think about items like their chocolate ranges etc!? Do they produce them themselves or do you think they buy them off another manufacture? |

I like the pink Champagne cream.
I used to get all my shopping there but since I have been on an economy drive, I find I don't miss it. I have some vouchers for M&S and found the range disappointing, it needs updating and refreshing. Like another poster says, Waitrose is much better and cheaper than M&S, but it is more expensive than Tesco. |

Also M&S used to do an amazing Caesar Chicken Pasta, which is now available in asda, and for a while the Hickory Steak penne, which is one of my fave M&S ready meals was available in Asda. I've noticed lots of things when I'm in M&S that are available in different boxes at lower prices in Asda. Its like Primark and Monsoon. A teacher at school once told us how she had seen a coat that would have been perfect for a fancy dress she was going to in Monsoon, but wasn't willing to pay over £80 for a coat she was going to wear once. She was then shocked to find the same coat for £15 in Primark. She asked about it and was told that Primark and Monsoon have some suppliers the same, and the difference is Primark add their labels and shove it on a hanger at a budget price, Monsoon label it, iron it then put it out at an inflated rate. I'm sure there are many companies that use the same suppliers without us knowing. |
