Just in case anyone goes to get one of the new Thomson 250GB PVRs in Argos, I went in yesterday and they tried to give me one of the old 250GB models, I refused to take it. I don't think they have any of the new ones in at all as the 500GB is unavailable to order online or pick up in store, they must just be clearing old stock.

There's also some sort of Setanta offer, think it's free for a year but there's a £20 connection fee, different from the one month free offer.

And that is exactly where they can stay - if the 6300-16 is anything to go buy.

It is without doubt the least reliable piece of kit I have ever purchased - I am trying to watch those recordings I can (some just won't play) before returning it as 'unfit foor the purpose'

Had the same problem myself think there breaking the law here as the new one is a different model number have been in touch with their customer services and they said there getting rid of old stock. The new model should be in around the end of aug 2008.. spoke to top up tv and they did not have any dates when its coing out. Can't find any info on this new box even if it's been tested and if it's any better than the old one. I hope the fan switches off in stand by as the other one is no good in a bedroom as it's to noisey. Does anyone know of any info links to this new model... simon.

I dont think this box exists! (16205)

reserved one in Argos last Sat - they gave me 16300 - errrr, not thanks, this is the worst thing I've ever bought in my life, I dont want another one !

bought one online Sunday night from Teso - £99.97

It arrived Tuesday - guess what 16300 !

returned it and orderd another one - price online now £119.97 ( they were very good and charged me the original price)

arrived today ...... yep, youve guessed its the 16300

apparently Head office are looking into it with Thomson now, but could take a while

Just wish I knew if its worth hanging on for - I'm hoping its going to be as fab as my trusty dhd 4000!

have spoken to consumer direct - had a long email back about if company states they may send an alternative blah blah blah- but basically they cant do this!

if anyone finds one please pm me !!!

Right now, it seems that it is the old box in a new cover because we're all still waiting for the mythical software update that will fix everything(tm). When the software update does finally arrive then it'll go to the old boxes too so it'll still be the same as the old box in a new cover with a few cosmetic additions like a front panel display. The only other difference is that the new boxes will go up to 500GB instead of 250GB.

Are you sure it has a front panel display?...it looks like it might from the pics, but it doesn't show anything up.
Tescos site shows a clearer pic than the Argos one: http://direct.tesco.com/product/images/?R=204-1335

Also I don't think the new one has an RF Modulator
The only other difference is that the new boxes will go up to 500GB instead of 250GB.
Although the old ones could be upgraded to 500GB

No, I'm not sure it has a front panel display, perhaps I am confusing it with the Wharfdale. The picture you point to on Tesco.com does show that it has enough blank space on the front to have a display there if it wanted one but if it does, then it isn't active in that picture.

The Argos website does say:
A substitute may be received of the same specification but cosmetically different.

Get out clause.. there breaking the law.. We could do that with anything.. You go into a vauxhall garage and say i will have that new diesel astra and they turn around and bring out a diesel corsa you would have something to say. This is crap they should sell what they have in the book.

Well I didn't complain when they substituted a Navman F20 for a Navman N40i because the F20 which was in the catalogue wasn't available.

Anyway, what difference does it make?....they are both 250GB DTR's made by Thomson, and will likely have virtually the same software onboard

Same happened to me years back when they didn't have the Liteon 5005, they substituted a 5004 which had more features than the 5005. It's only questionable when they substitute something with less functionality than the original. Besides which it's Argos, you can take it back within 14 days anyhow.

Point taken but the box they bring out is the old model and is not even in the latest book now.. So it goes back to what isaid you buy a new model car but the give the old model but it has a better cd player you would take that.. I don't think so..

It's 30 days now, but PVRs (or anything with recordable media built in AFAICS) are excluded.

The 30 day thing is a 'no questions asked' refund policy but if you are mis-sold or are not happy with the functionality of any item then the law says that you take it back 'within a reasonable time', one or 2 weeks after purchase at the most I'd say.

You can reject it under the sale of goods act if you find it's faulty before you accept it, or it's mis-described, not just if you're not happy with the functionality (assuming that was correctly described). I'd say 2 weeks was pushing it for accepting/rejecting the product.

The 30 days offered by Argos is no questions asked as long as it's not excluded from it in the first place!

I hve the 'new' rounded shape with the front panel and its only a couple of warning state leds nothing else. I find the box is good and software is fine no crashes or messed up recordings like other have had, but what is doing my nut in is the Noise from the fan!

...even in standby it sounds like theres a van parked outside my window!!! has anyone found a trick or fix, im seriously thinking about opening it up and removing/replacing it with a quieter fan, i love the box but the noise is driving me potty!

I think the new ones (DT16021something) are square and therefore you have the older model.(DIT6300something)

The new Thomson DT16021S-25 is down 20 notes to £79.99at Argos, thats if your lucky enough to actually get the new box OR more to the point IF you want one

Think I might get one from Argos just to say I've tried, if it plays up back to Argos it goes.......

I've had 2 go back already, the first Argos shop said that next time I went back they would send it for repair so I went to another Argos and had no bother at all.
£80 is worth it just for Setanta.
