Lots of Hi8 to transfer via DMREZ27

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting the DMREZ27 for all it's input options so I can easily create DVDs out of my old Hi8 tapes.
Reading the manual I can't see how I'll get the best quality with all the 90 minute tapes if it's not set to automatically detect recording mode (Flexible Recording FR mode). It looks like it's either XP 1HR or SP 2 hours. Surely it needs to know whats coming before it can use FR ie is FR only for timed recordings (when it knows what is coming) or does it ask how long you intend to feed in an external source when recording this way.
Anyone got any experience.

Hi Richard.

You are quite correct that the machine needs to know beforehand.
It is simply a case of inputting a time length at the beginning of manual recordings.
