I'm told that sat nav will not work in a car with a heat reflective screen. Is that so?

It depends - depends on how the screen is designed and also on the sat nav system. Some satnavs will work fine, others won't be able to get a good lock on. You're best to check the returns policy of whichever company you buy the kit from, and see if you can return unwanted goods.

But yeah, it's really difficult to say - what kind of car is it you're driving?

I know someone with a heat reflective screen in a Megane, and their TomTom doesn't work with the inbuilt aerial. They have one of these external aerials, which can be routed outside via the driver's door and clips magnetically onto the roof.

Interesting, but the product description says that the antenna can be placed on the dashboard.

The car comes with a little 'shark fin' antenna on the roof that would be used for a Renault sat nav system. I wonder whether that could be used in any way.

Then again my TomTom works fine with my Megane reflective screen. Go figure.

Don't some of them use different GPS chipsets?

Perhaps this would alter the sensitivity of the unit?

Quite possibly. I have a One XL and have never had a problem with GPS reception. It even works inside most of the time. The RDS reception is a totally different issue - originally it was useless but now after a recent software update it's improved to the level of being "poor"

Then there are probably different type of reflective windscreens which block different wavelengths. The only way to find out to to buy one and try it.
