Receiving international calls
Moony
02-08-2008
Hi

I have done a search but cant really seem to find any info about this.

I know if you are abroad and you recieve a call on your mobile from somebody in the UK - you are charged for recieving the call as well as them being charged for making it (presumably because you are connecting to a foreign network whilst abroad).

However - what is the situation if you recieve a call on your mobile from somebody who is abroad - whilst you are still in the uk - does the "double charge" still apply?

Cheers

There are 3 scenarios for international calls:

1 - The caller is in the UK, and the recipient is abroad:
Caller pays usual rate for calling you (possibly in inclusive minutes as per tarrif etc). The receiving person pays for the international leg of the incomming call.

2 - The Caller is abroad, and the recipient is in the UK:
Caller pays the internal call rate from wherever they are to the UK. The receiving person pays nothing as they are on their home network.

3 - Both parties are roaming abroad (even in the same country). The caller pays the international leg of the call back to the UK. The recipient pays the international leg of the call from the UK to wherever they are roaming.

Hope this helps.

(There may be some different ways of doing option 3 - depending on the network operator and various agreements in place, it is possible, if you're both in the same country, that the caller will get billed the local rate for calling a local mobile phone, and the recipient of the call won't get billed - not sure if any networks support this - but I do know that some foreign networks send you an SMS to tell you that to call UK mobiles you don't need to add the country code prefix)

Also worth adding in here voicemail when you're abroad:

The person calling you pays for a regular call as per the rules above.

Whilst the phone rings, you pay for an incoming international call (Yes. International rates are from when you connect to the remote network, not when the call connects).

Whilst the person leaves a message, you pay for an outbound call to the UK

To pick up the message, thats another outbound call to the Uk.
