charged for using google maps
Hi, I'm on three and I downloaded google maps onto my phone and used it early last month. I've received my bill and it says I have been charged £3 for internet usage.
What can I do? |

Google Maps uses a data connection. The maps aren't actually stored on your phone, hence the use of data.

if you dont have a data package then you can pay the charge. Or is this a new tactic we all can use? Ive bought a few tops in Next last week and ive been charged £44. What can i do?

And when you first start Google Maps it warns you that your service provider will charge for data. It then recommends you have a data plan or add-on.

The thing is, I've used Google Maps before on the phone and haven't been charged.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do, just consider yourself lucky its just £3, if you wish to use google maps more than i suggest you get a data tariff call up three and see what they can do for you. I think the reason why you previously were not charged is that you may have some free usage 1MB? This is a guess. Best option is to call up and see what your options on data are

The point is your question was stupid. Asking what you can do when you are, shock horror, being asked to pay for a service you have used. Did it even occur to you to ring your network and ask them anything about it first? IM fairly sure they would have explained to you why you have been charged.
I have rung CS and they have told me I have been charged for internet usage but can't tell me what I used exactly |

Count yourself lucky it was only £3 - Google Maps can be VERY expensive without a data plan (hence the warning at startup)....

What can I do? You're lucky. Personally i think i have been well & truly stitched up. I listened to a bbc listen again radio show on my nokia n95 and got a £76 bill for an hours listening ( i also fell asleep). I accessed the webpage via my home wireless connection. Clicked on a link to listen to the radio and it did say that i need to access a data connection to visit the site. (that;s where it went wrong) I thought as i was already using my own wireless connection at home, that would be the data connection that i would use. It turned out that as soon as real player launched on the N95, the default setting was to use the 3 access point to get a data connection (although i was already using my own). I received a few text messages to inform me my bill was going up, but unfortunately the first text said i own £55 quid, the second text £44, then the third £22 etc, etc. Ive called them, they have said it is totally my own fault. It would have been nice if it said i am leaving my own data connection and joining another. Still, i guess i have learnt the hard way. Make sure you either pay for a data package, or make sure you chck he config for every applicationon your phone.

18 days your right and Real Player shouldn't do that i checked my phone and it has Orange Internet as my default access point (changed it now) and on top of that default use limit is unlimited!, it doesn't even give the option to "ask"
Well i do have a data bundle and i don't use real player so that's lucky but that does suck what happened to you, but thanks on the heads up, usually i would blame user error but that is pretty unlucky. |

Cheers Niranjaniz,
Just would have been nice for 3's tech support / complaints to emulate it like you have. Then they may have seen what i was complaining about. |
