We were driving past a pub today and I noticed a board advertising a meal for £3.50. I hadn't time to see whether it was for a Sunday lunch, a weekday lunch or evening meal or not. What I do know is that there's no way I'd go to a pub for a £3.50 meal - it's hard enough to get a sandwich in a pub for £3.50 nowadays, never mind a meal. God knows what it was like!

However, could I be wrong. Does anyone know of a pub where you would get a decent meal for £3.50? I'd have said at least a fiver, and probably more, for a half-way decent meal.

Weatherspoons have BOGOF's in some pubs on some of their meals - think its in the region of £6/£7 for a meal?

Haven't had the pleasure of sampling them though - have been told they aren't that great

I had a 10oz rump steak with chips, peas, portion of onion rings and a pint, and a big chocolate cake with ice cream for under a tenner at Wetherspoons the other week. Tasted very nice too. Can't beat £3.50 but they also have a 'burger and a pint' meal which I think is about a fiver.

My local does an All Day Breakfast for £2.49, or you can have a curry with a pint for £5. Both are very nice, even if it's obvious they are just ready meals.

My kids get decent pub meals for around that price.

Toby Carvery does a sandwich meal during the day for that sort of price. Loads of meat, half a bagette and as much veg (including roast spud) as you like. Cant beat it!!!!

I noticed a big Weatherspoons type pub in Liverpool (on Water Street I think) that was offering a burger and a pint for £3.50. Not sure I would trust the meat in that whoppa!

I think that that's the same price as their carvery too.

I must admit that they where not that good a few years ago, but now they are a lot better (most of the time they are good, but you do get the odd dodgy one sometimes in diffrent places).

I like their curry nights on Thursday nigths.

Same deal but £4.60 in Hereford. Un-believable value.Really nice burger, and about 4 times thicker than a Mc Donalds quarter pounder, and nice steak cut chips.I have at least one of these meals a week now!

I think you can get deals in most of the chain pubs, and on the wholw they are OK, if unspectacular.

The lamb burger that comes with the pint in Wetherspoons is one of the best

You can't beat a £3.50 carvery - especially later in the evening when the pub gets quieter and they give you big helpings of meat!

Carveries are the work of the devil. Why not just go somewhere and have a roast dinner? At least you know it hasn't been sitting under a hot lamp in the restaurant for hours.

There is a Polish pub in my town where you can get a big fat Polish sausage, served with a heap of fried onions, a little dish of mustard and another one of ketchup and three slices of delicious Polish bread and butter for the bargain price of two quid.
It's rather lovely, too.

While some folk wouldn't say that was a meal, it suits me for lunch when I'm out and about.

For me a pub lunch has to be in a traditional pub. Somewhere out in the country with ig beams across the walls and an a landlord who looks a bit like a sex offender. Big traditional meals served on big plates.

Popping into a Varsity or a Weatherspoons and getting Thai Noodles with a rice cake for me isn't a 'pub lunch'

We don't have carveries in NI like you do across the water so the last time I was in Brum I was invited to a carvery with some friends. It was only £3.50 and the plate was full - and very tasty too.

They are indeed. I just don't understand why they're so popular. They make the whole pub hot and they stink the place out. And who the hell wants a roast dinner on a boiling hot day in August? Come to think of it who the hell wants a carvery at any time other than Sunday lunch? I don't understand how they make any money the other 6 days of the week. All the Brewer's Fayres round our way have gone carvery on me, and it irritates me.

I don't like carveries, can you tell

I think they are visited by the same people who go on all inclusive Holidays myself.

Toby Carvery on the weekends are very good. Think it was £5 and you have a mound of food! The meat was very high quality, and because of how busy it is, the food is constantly changing and not sitting around. You couldnt cook it for that quality at that price.

Oh yeah, the Carvery is pretty good value, even on the night time its still only £7 or so and the drinks are relatively cheap

They don't rip you off (well my local 2 don't) even if they are in-situ to TravelLodges etc

Makes you wonder where their meat comes from when it's that cheap though doesn't it? Plus add in the quality of the staff they employ to be able to do it. Hmmm.

That's why I'd never eat a cheap pub steak. There was a watchdog-type programme a while back that said the steaks at a large chain of pubs weren't even from cows. They were from a crossbread cow/antelope with something like 70% cow genetics. They were also tough and tasteless, but very cheap to rear on very poor land.

As with all things, you get what you pay for.
