For some odd reason they decided to design the menu like this - http://i35.tinypic.com/33ymm4w.png

Its annoying because I'm not sure what the name of the episode I'm watching is.

Apparantly you can get firmware updates for this model. Does anyone know where to find them and would they change this awful menu?

Thanks.

Actually, the 5980 has a very good reputation as a DivX compliant DVD player.

There is a firmware download here:

http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/d...=Link_Software

Dunno if that'll expand the filenames though. A lot of DVD players only display filenames to 8 characters. Mine included .... although, mine is about 4/5 years old so it has a good excuse!

Plus .... is the name of the episode really that big a deal? As long as I can see the "S01E01" part I'm happy cos at least I know whcih episode it is!

If I know the name it makes it easier for me to reccomend the ep to a friend

Thanks for the reply.

Just rename the file. Instead of so1e01 use 1x01 like I do. It makes the difference.

Hi there, I have this player. I downloaded some custom firmware which means filenames go across the screen rather than halfway.

Try this site. I make no comment on the quality of the firmware file as I do not have the 5980.

I wouldn't hold you responsible, that would be rather 'arse-hole-ish' of me.
