I see HD DVD's are no longer available to buy so what's the difference?

You can find old HD DVD's for £4.99 in the shops but a Blue Ray DVD Player (non recorder) is £250 cheapest? It's a bit over priced considering the price of Sky HD is down in price plus it can record.

Is there any difference in picture quality or is Blue Ray just a newer format so they can change double the price for some films in high definition?

same as betamax vs. vhs - format war (sony-bluray - hddvd - toshiba) bluray has one... no more / minimal new hd dvds (betamax) will be released so thats why its cheap. stay with bluray (the vhs of hd dvd format)

bluray also stores more data on a disc. its also only just coming available that u can record onto bluray.

its new tech so yes its expensive. hddvd is cheap because its now a dead format -

So do you see any difference in a HD DVD than a Blue Ray one apart from what a disc can store?

The quality of both is equal and both offer movies in better quality than what you get from Sky HD and its penny pinching compressed channels

yeah pic quality between the two is near-identical...

bluray can store more data on a disc. but this isnt a big factor as to why bluray one the format war. Essentially, pretty much all the major movie comapnies - fox, paramount, 20th century fox etc... will only make bluray discs NOT hddvd discs - deals have been struck. So if you go with hddvd, you wont get the latest releases. Your stuck with the current and previous hddvd catalogue.
