Bit Worried About my Tosh LCD
Al_T3D
11-08-2008
Hi Folks, I bought one of these last month:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-47Z3...8448881&sr=8-1

Great looking TV, pretty much happy with it so far, BUT!!

I've watched a couple of BluRay films on it recently, Batman Begins and The Golden Compass. And I'm getting a lot of 'ghosting' or 'traces'. For example when a character moves their head, it leaves faint traces of the image behind, giving it a slightly sickly feeling. When things move, it leaves a trail. This is only for a split second, but when it's all going on on the screen it starts to look a bit blurry and and blotchy. I've not tested all my Blu-rays yet, so I don't know if this is gonna happen on all of 'em. Anyone else have this TV or this problem. I'm using a PS3 for Bluray playback. I've noticed nothing like this on games. Is it a 1080p thing? 'cause before I had a 720p Tosh, and had nothing like this. Come to think of it, I watched Close Encounters a couple of weeks ago, and that looked fine.

Does it have any video processing enhancements designed to "improve" fast motion? If so can you turn these off?

It does have things like that. I've not tinkered too much yet though, just wondered if anyone else had the same issue. Thinking about it, the issue seems to have started since doing a calibration with the DVE bluray disc. I watch all blurays on PS3, I've not noticed this issue with games at all.

Long post!

Well if you pop over to the AV Forums there is a massive thread - nearly all positive about the Tosh Z Series TVs!

There are over 100 pges - but lots of info on setting etc.

http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=612812

I have the 42Z - for which I paid 1080 quid last Dec.

And I love it.

For a 47in I would think you need to sit about 10 feet away - but nearer for HD.

The Blu-Ray pictures on mine are stunning.

Here are my settings - and then links to some pictures:-

My settings as of 21st Jan 2008 - which may still change - and have been set whilst watching the BBC HD channel which started properly today

For channels that I think my settings are not too good - I don't change the settings for it - I just use the 'natural' pre-setting

When watching I just have a tall lamp on in the far corner of the room (60 watt equivalent)

Active Backlight On
Cinema mode On
Film Stabilization Smooth
Active Vision M100 On
XvYCC greyed out
3D Colour management Off
Base colour adjustment greyed out

Picture settings menu:-

Backlight 66
Contrast 44 (was 46)
Brightness 44 (was 46)
Colour 40
Tint 0
Sharpness 0
Blackstretch Off
MPEG NR Off
DNR Off
Colour Temperature Cool

SERVICE SETTING (I've not altered mine)
WARNING - DON'T TOUCH THESE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING - AND WRITE DOWN SETTINGS FIRST - BREAKS YOUR WARRANT:-

RCUT = 00H
GCUT = 00H
BCUT = 00H
RDRV = 8EH
GDRV = 88H
BDRV = 7FH
BRTC = 03H
COLC = C8H
UVTT = FCH
CNTX = 86H

Pictures on my PhotoBucket:-

Here are just 3 of them:-

I've got a Tosh 42z3030. Try these settings, they work for me - the picture is amazing in HD!

Active Backlight:- On
Cinema Mode:- On
Film Stabilization:- On
Active Vision:- On
xcYCC:- Auto
3D Colour:- Off

Backlight:- 25 (Increase to taste, but for me, anything above 40 and I need sunglasses on!!!)
Contrast:- 100
Brightness:- 70
Colour:- 40
Tint:- 0
Sharpness:- -50 (minus 50)
Black stretch:- Off
MPEG NR:- Off
DNR:- Off
Colour temp:- Natural

I used DVE HD to calibrate, and have since checked the settings using the Avia dvd.

Thanks Daveac and Guitar Dave for the listings. I did indeed go to AV Forums a couple of weeks ago and DL'd a PDF of settings, and they did a great job. I did calibrate with a DVE disc first, but I think I had some setting 'ON', the DNR, but now it's off, all good. And yes, bloody good TV, and for £850......bargainacious!

Again thanks all for your replies. Good job.
