I've just been out to get a Chinese for my tea. Not a particularly remarkable occurrence... except for the fact that I've come home empty-handed! (Actually, that's a bit of a lie, I've got fish and chips.) I live a little bit out of town, so I drove to the nearest place, which was closed. Then I went a little way down the road to another Chinese, which was closed. I drove round and round the streets of this little town, past about five different closed Chinese takeaways.

Thinking it might be something to do with that backward town (they close everything down and go outside to wave pitchforks when they see an aeroplane), I went to the next populated place along the road, which is on the outskirts of a city in a completely different county. Again, every Chinese was closed. Is it just this rubbish area, or have the Chinese packed up en masse and gone to Beijing for the Olympics? It's the only explanation I can think of for all the Chinese takeaways in two separate towns being closed!

because they need a day off too and its more cost effective to close on a weekday than a weekend when most people have takeaways.

It's always been Tuesday for closing round here, and you only see one or two open on a Sunday... perhaps there's been some sort of directive to standardise them

Yeah the Chinese takeaways close on a monday here too because they open 6 days a week. They do close for a while though when its Chinese New Year.

A lot of the takeaways around here are closed on Mondays. The problem I personally have is Monday is always the day I'm most likely to want a takeaway!

They need a rest as it's often the same people all working, generally family members. I'd expect Monday to be the quietest evening for takeaways so that's probably why they choose it for their day off.

There's at least four Chinese takeaways within about five-ten minutes walking distance from my house.

The one across the road is open tonight, but it is a very popular one.

I know the delivery driver, should I tell him to stop by?

Our local one is terrible. The last takeaway I had from there was a Chow Mein - and I could only eat a few mouthfulls of it despite being starving.

I can make something quicker, tastier, healthier and cheaper at home than going to the takeaway.

Me too, quite often I look at the menu, decide what I want, let the OH agonise about his only to suddenly realise it's Monday. We never learn.

There is a great chinese takeaway that recently opened on the ground floor of my tenement building and it's open just now. Most of them close on Monday's around here though.

If they had any sense, Monday-opening is obviously a good business opportunity for the canny Chinese takeaway owner

I thought that most chinese takeaways deliver the food and/or you can phone to order and they tell you when it will be ready, so maybe you could have phoned first to see if the chinese you were going to was open

Chinese takeaways here are always open.
