Poor sound levels on iPods

It annoys me that Apple treat us like 2 year olds and limit the sound levels on iPods. They seem to think that everyone uses the in-ear phones that they supply or a variation thereof, but I for one despise them and I'm probably not alone in that (they hurt my ears!).

I use traditional headphones - a good brand Sennheiser - but still some songs I've downloaded are really well below the sound level I'd like. I downloaded Metallica's "One" the other day and wanted to really blast it out, as you have to with that song, but instead got a very weedy level instead.

I'd be eternally grateful if anyone can tell me how to disable the limiter - it's a brand new 80GB iPos Classic.

It's bad enough that Apple are involved with the scam known as DRM let alone nannying over the volume limit .

I haven't ever used an ipod & never will but a friend told me about this site.

Hope you get the loudness that you need

You can always boost it in iTunes.

Right click on the track in question you wish to higher the volume of and go to "Get Info". A box will appear. Click on the Options tab at the top. Under "Volume Adjustment" slide the slider across to +100% to double the volume of the track.

Or on the iPod (this is from experience of Nano) Menu>Settings>Volume Limiter>Slider.

Thanks, and I do hope that helps,
Matt

Much as dislike the way Apple sell their iPods, in this case, the blame lies with the EU, not with them.

It's EU legislation that they have to limit the volume .... it's meant to apply to all goods of that type sold within the EU.

Tons of websites detailing how to remove it (usually involves installing the US firmware I believe). Just google for "eu volume limit" (you can also stick ipod in there if you want but you don't need to .... try it and you'll see what I mean).

I'd hack the firmware myself rather than using iTunes' stupid proprietary volume normalisation system which is utter rubbish.

some of the low volumes are very noticable on older albums such as the metallica album you mentioned there.

newer albums are mastered at a higher volume so some tracks by artists are much quieter than the newer ones.

try the new red hot chili peppers albums compared to the old ones. have to be nearly twice as loud.

as suggested playing around with the volume levels helps.

try MP3Gainhttp://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/

this is FAR better tool than using the piece of junk in iTunes. This will level out all the songs to the same level. BUT you can only do it before you add them to iTunes. I have pretty much all of mine done this way, it makes a lot of difference and boost the level up to what you want the default is set at 89db, I set mine to 94 to give that slight bit of sound boost.

if you want to boost songs on your iPod you'll have to take them off, sync use MP3gain then add them back in.

Seconded, although if you set it above 89db you will get clipping on a fair amount of tracks. Personally i stick to the 89db default.
