Switching from BT to Sky
craigdawes
12-08-2008
I have been with BT for years for their home phone line.
I have sky+. Multiroom, BB (Mid) all with Sky.

BT have suddenly started charging me for text messages (that I get when a voice mail received) and have started charging me for evening calls even though I had subscribed to their Free evening and weekend calls...

They never contact you by phone, bloody good job really, trying to speak to Calcutta..!!

They are good at replying to emails though, but not getting anywhere..

I have just been on line and switched to Sky Talk - 50p a month cheaper than BT anyway..

Anyone got any good or bad points about Sky talk over BT..

Thanks

Good points-
Free evening and weekend calls with sky (after 6pm and before 6am counts as evening). Free calls to sky should you need to call them. 5%cheaper on uk mobiles and international calls when compared to BT's unlimited weekends rates. Free itemised paper billing on request.

Downsides-
7p connection fee on chargeable calls as opposed to 6p with BT. 0845 numbers are 6p min at all times compared to BT's 2p daytime and 0.5p evenings. 0870 numbers are 10p min daytime and 8p min evenings with sky but only 6p min and 1.5p min evenings with BT.

If you call 08 numbers a lot, I wouldn't recommend skytalk over BT. If you don't, then you may find that they save you some money.

I've just had my BT bill and it would appear that their connection fee is 7p as all calls I have made lasting 2-3 seconds, i.e. reaching someone's answerphone (hanging up straight away), are charged at 0.07 pence.

Hmmmn, then BT need to update their tariff details on their website.

Could be that the call you were making was a penny a minute though...6p plus the 1p... I would imagine they would round up to the nearest minute, unless it is per second billing.

I was under the impression the BT had a minimum charge per call of 5p (unless you're on unlimited calls package).
I assume a call of a few seconds would be rounded up to a minute,ie 5p minimum +3p for the call=8 pence.

BT abolished the minimum call charge some time ago - at the same time as they introduced their 3p 'call set-up fee' and changed from per-second charging to per-minute charging.

The CSUF then became 6p and, from 16-9-08, becomes 7p.

So, from 16-9-08, making a weekday daytime call and hitting someone's 1571 message because they are engaged on a call already will cost 11p (7p CSUF + 4p for the first minute).

...........assuming, of course, you don't make such calls for a flat rate 5p via 1899, 18185 or 18866 and still use BT to make such calls (and aren't on their Unlimited Anytime Plan).
