BB USA - preconceptions and conclusions!
It's the first summer I've really followed Big Brother USA and although I've not got E4, I've seen sufficient content on the web.
As the series draws to a close, some comments on some previous preconceptions: EVICTION PROCEDURE I like the Head of Household format - it works quite well and makes for a good show. Prior to the series, I wasn't so sure about the lack of public vote but I guess with the Head of Household nominating, you either have to lose the housemates voting or the public vote. If the format came to the UK, I'm sure the public vote would remain, but then the housemates lose all control. With the traditional nomination procedure ALL housemates have a say in who goes, while in the BB USA eviction procedure, the housemates get to have their say then on the Head of Household nominations. I think losing the public vote does remove a key element of the show - but keeping it would have been at the cost of another key element in the voting. TASKS Most people look at the Big Brother USA tasks and think they are brilliant when compared to our live Pass the Parcel competitions. Some of them are brilliant and quite original, but I have been disapointed by their flagship competition - for Head of Household. Each HoH Challenge appears to be answering questions about events in the house. The rules surrounding each challenge vary slightly, but basically most of them are quiz shows about Big Brother. VETO The Veto is a brilliant idea on paper - it means that anything can happen and should result in much more twists between nominations and evictions. On screen though, it doesn't work. Throughout the series the Veto has only been used once to save someone else, and a couple of times to save themselves. The producers need to tackle this - possibley have the HoH make three nominations, with the Veto holder having to save one of them. HOSTS I've not seen enough of Julie Chen to compare her with Davina, but it's a different show. Davina has to handle a live crowd - Julie just works in a studio. I also get the impression Julie is much more restricted by her bosses considering there is no tension in eviction announcements and the interviews are very scripted. I'd say Davina is a bigger fan of our show than Julie is of theirs. FORMAT Well, it's basically two different formats under the same name. However, one thing that has disapointed me is the role of "Big Brother" in the US version. They are very rarely heard on screen and the houseguests know each Big Brother on first-name terms. They overdirect the houseguests - telling them what's going to happen and then to pretend to ignore. The most disapointing thing IMO is that they make the houseguests read instructions over and over again until they get the material they want for a perfect edit. And also, while it's unfair to compare coverage considering we get E4 and BBLB, Big Brother fans get alot more coverage from out website than theirs. They get the live feeds and an episode summary, while we get continous updates. Also, the way their shows are edited to focus on the game of Big Brother means they also lose out on alot of the human interaction perspective of the programme. So, BB4 UK might not have lived up to previous series, but overall, I think we compare well with our US counterpart. |

well i have to say our BB was crap!!! to see the fianl winner - being Cameron just proves it. he acted all the way through it. what a complete con. they bascially wait for us the public to vote off all the interesting ones.
i want to see peeoples real characters, like ali in bb4 usa, she is playing a game, that we all see, and yet she still has us waiting to see what she will do? now that is good tv, not watching steph and cameron feeding the chickens every day!! usa bb is great, and i will be an avid watcher, and bbuk can go and shove itself where the sun don't shine! |
