How Come Tvs Cost So Much In The New Argos Book?
Hello
Have just been looking in the new argos book and the TVs seem very very expensive. They want £799.99 for a Sony 32in KDL32W400 ![]() Does any one else think this is a bit much for just a 32in screen? |

Went to press months before when prices on the high street were higher, limitation of a catalogue based operation and the inertia it creates when faced with what has become a volatile market which has bucked the trend in terms of ever increasing prices.

What he means is it takes too long to change prices in a catalogue. Plus prices on almost everything else have gone up recently, but tellys are getting cheaper.

It also allows Argos to have " massive sales" - so when they offer this for £699 inline with many other retailers they can promote £100 off (or whatever), also that £799 was the typical price a month back so would be about right.
Richersounds are doing it for around £660 or £730 with 5 year guarantee.... Sony Centres seem to do it for £799 with 5 year guarantee and option to buy a Sony Blu Ray player for £50. Incidentally, this TV produces some great pictures on SD and HD programmes.

I'm guessing the W400 is the new version - no idea what the difference is - that's probably a question for someone like Nigel Goodwin as he works for a Sony dealership.... |

I can understand the point of local independent retailers (better service if you are lucky). I can understand the point of John Lewis (5 yr guarantee). I can understand the point of "whoever's cheapest on the internet". But I can't understand why anyone would go to Argos for a TV (unless it happened to be the cheapest, which in this case it clearly isn't).

I think you're looking at the wrong models - Richer Sounds have the W4000 for £ 679 not the W400.

I was a bit out on the Richersounds price, apologies for the confusion (I was going by memory and apparently my memory isn't what it used to be) but I was only out by £19 and what's that in todays prices when petrol nearlys costs that a gallon

Why, when most Sony's come with a free 5 year guarantee from their dealers?.
because the sony dealer price is generally inflated to include cost of the 5y guarantee, compared to independant dealers with whom you can then price match them againt JL to get a lower price + 5 y guarantee

The prices are not inflated when the 5 year promos come along as these are backed by the manufacturer not the shop. The fact that the prices are higher than on line is because it costs a lot more to have a propper shop with trained staff that actually know what they are talking about and can look after the customer before and after the sale. What really Pis**s me off are people who need all the help in the world to choose a tv, take up hours of your time then pull out an internet price. As far as I'm concerned they should have the decency to say up-front they are looking at on line price so we can try to match the service we give o the price they want to pay. |

All I'll say is shop around, I got the 46w4000 for the price of the 40W4000. Just ask people to price match.

I try to support our local independent retailer where you can see different brands side by side. I can't see the point of an all-Sony or all-Panasonic shop - for me the whole point of going into a shop is to compare.
I'll happily pay a 10-15% premium locally over internet prices as our local shop has friendly intelligent staff with independent advice (not plugging a particular brand), free delivery, 10 months interest-free credit on everything (if you ask for it), and on the odd occasion where a product has been disappointing they've swapped it for something else. I wouldn't ask them to match an internet price but I might allude to internet prices and ask if there's any flexibility - there often is. I do agree people who use up hours of expertise in a shop only to insist on an internet price which includes no expertise and very little service are parasites. But it's up to the local shop to provide good reasons to support them. Let's face it, some local retailers are a lot better than others. But use 'em or lose 'em. |

Most "dealers" are independant operations using the Sony Centre or shop@Panasonic franchise scheme.

As have many Sony Centres or been taken over by Sony to keep them going. Why does it always have to be an attack on Panasonic? Panasonic a few years ago just didn't have the advertising to back up the idea of a shop@Panasonic. Sony on the other piles Bundles into supporting them on both TV and local Press.
Also the term "dealer" in the context it was originally used normally refers to a Brand name such as Vauxhall or Ford, as in The "Vauxhall Dealer". Yes many shops selling Panasonic or Sony are owned by people having no connection to the brand, but most people call these stockists. |

The failure high of Panasonic shops was said to be due to Panasonic dropping support for them, due to their own financial problems. Possibly those are behind them now?, and hopefully they may do better. However, it's always going to be difficult trying to sell just a single make. Quote:

A 'stockist' would be someone like Tesco's who occasionally stock Sony, but aren't any kind of dealer. |

Have been chatting to the Rep for Pana recently re the financial problems that you keep refering to. He said that like Sony there were issues a few years ago but they are history now and the company is doing fine now.
I'm also confused about the last post as it seems to contradict me and say the same thing at the same time! I have only ever had Sony car audio, in interest of fairness!!! |
