Johnny Cash has died at the age of 71, in hospital in Nashville Tennessee.

He was truely a legend and will be greatly missed.

Sad news

One of the few occasions where the word "legend" isn't an overstatement.

Very sorry to hear of his passing he has left a legacy of music that will be hard to surpass. My thoughts go to his family who lost thier mum (June Carter of the famous First Family of Country, The Carter Family) just a few weeks ago.

Here is the Carter Family Web Site. Maybelle Carter was June's mum Roseanne Carters Grandma. Johnny Cash's Mother in law.

Sad news... Maybe Bob Harris will be doing a tribute on his shows this weekend on Radio 2..

Just flicked over to Mean Country a minute ago, just in time to hear a couple of Johnny Cash songs played as a tribute, one of which was "A Boy Named Sue"... rather interestingly the bit where he's supposed to say "Son of a bitch" was bleeped out... Do they consider that offensive to some people, or was it bleeped out on the CD? It sounded as though Mean Country had fallen off air!

Article here and Obituary here

It was probably bleeped out on the original recording to start with.

BTW - VH 1 classic will be showing "Johnny Cash: Storytellers" tonight at 10 pm, while The Biography Channel will be screening a tribute to Johnny Cash tomorrow night at 10:30pm.

My mum has the CD, she's a big fan. The part where he says "Son of a bitch" is bleeped out on the CD, which was produced in the 70's, so thats probably why.

Although I didn't really like the sort of music he made, I did know how big a name he was, and the respect he deserved because of it. May he rest in peace.

Johnny Cash and John Ritter in the same week. A sad week for the entertainment industry.

Padzter (The smiling smilie I usually use didn't seem proper).

His last four "American" albums were totally wonderful - the last one featuring a particularly stunning version of Desperado

RIP Johnny

I'm a massive Johnny Cash fan and have seen him in concert a number of times despote being only 33. All versions of "A Boy Named Sue" that I have is bleeped, in fact the only time I have heard the song in it's original format is when Channel 4 showed "Johnny Cash - Live at San Quentin" a few years ago.

It's very sad news, and hope that some of the terrestrial channels do some tribute shows

Not trying to disrespectful or controversial.

But I never liked his music, not my thing really, but I did enjoy his last song.......the one that has his wife in the video,

But as already stated he was a legend, and when you see bands or singers of today, are these really going to get to legendary status like the likes of Johnny Cash.

I think RR was refering to the singers today becoming legendary.

There's very few of today's singers that will achieve legendary status. I'm thinking of people like Gareth Gates, Westlife, Will Whatever his Name is. They'll be long forgotten in years to come and you can't imagine them having a 50+ year career can you?
