Hi,

We have two sockets, which were installed 30 years ago by BT.

We would like to install additional sockets. I am sure I can do this install myself, all I need to know is how to install the extra sockets.

Our current setup is as follows:

The Master Socket is upstairs in front bedroom and the socket which runs off this, Slave Socket is in the front reception room downstairs, which has a telephone connected to it.

There is a extension cord running from the master socket to my room, which has the Router and Telephone connected to it.

As we are doing a major refurb, I was wondering if I could, if possible to install four more sockets.

Ultimately I would end up with the following setup.

One Master socket in upstairs front bedroom.
(corded telephone connected)

One Socket in the upstairs back bedroom.
(would have the router/telephone connected)

Two sockets in the downstairs front reception.
(cordless telephone and skyplus box connected)

Two sockets in the living room.
(would have skyplus box connect, leaving one spare)


Is this setup possible?

Would I have any problems, if so, what would they be?

Lastly, how do I actually wire the sockets, I can buy some wire and sockets from wickes, but is there a diagram or a guide which somebody could point me to, where this is explained in detail.

if the master socket is a NTE5(has 2 small screws, which then has a removable faceplate), then it's very simple. get good quality cable(cat 5/6) and connect the blue/white to pin 2 and the white/blue to pin 5. repeat this with all the sockets. you will need a white IDC tool(available prob's from wickes,cost pences).
i would if poss daisy chain your ext'ns as the IDC connector on the face plate was only designed for a max of 3 terminations.
i'm guessing the ext'ns are for sky boxes, as in this day and age with cordless phones and wireless routers there is no need for ext'ns. if possible buy a filtered faceplate from adslnation as the amount of ext'ns will have an effect on your overall b/band speed.
if you don't have a NTE5, i.e just sockets with no faceplate, you will have to contact to service provider and tell them you want to add your own ext'ns but don't have a NTE5(therefore no demarcation point) they will then send us out to install one for you.

Describes wiring extensions. plus shows what a NTE5 socket looks like. If your master socket does not look like this then it may be an LJU type which you should not be opening up.

I would also get bt to replace the The Master Socket and probably the wire to the telegraph pole too if it's all still 30 years old.

We don't have a NTE5 Master Socket, it is a LJU2 Master Socket, the second socket, located in downstairs reception room is a LJU2 Secondary Socket.

I imagine any additional sockets are going to be added to the secondary socket? I won't be touching the Master Socket. Would BT still have a problem with this, even though I don't pay them any rent..etc.

You mention that the NTE5 was only designed for 3 terminations? What is the limitation of the old LJU2 Master sockets?

I would call BT out, but they charge alot, I have been quoted £150 plus £99 per hour. Forgive me, but I believe I can do the wiring myself, just need abit of direction.

the IDC terminations(like a white block and the wire pushes into it) were designed to hold a maximum of 3 wires, any more and they will just pop out. if you have got just lju's, i would still recommend calling your cp saying you don't have a nte5 and would like to add your own ext'ns, they should do this for free as it is in our contractual agreement with the cp's that lines be standardised.

Has some useful pictures to show how to connect up the extension sockets. Although it does show all six terminals wired, which isn't strictly necessary. You need pins 2 and 5 (the middle ones of each block) and optionally 3.

3 is the ring wire it connects the ring capacitor from the master through to the secondary sockets. Some modern phones don't need the ring wire at all. And a lot of ADSL microfilters incorporate a ring capacitor as well so you might get away with not using it.

I would wire up pin 3 to begin with. Sometimes it can cause noise problems that affect broadband. If you get problems just disconnect it at the master socket - when you get your NTE5 installed obviously If the phones continue to ring then leave it off. You could wire it as far as the master but test the phones ring before connecting it. If they all ring then leave it off. Doesn't take much effort to wire it up as you install everything but could be a real pain in the bottom if you didn't then find you needed it after all.

I might give them another call, to see if they can install a NTE5 master socket, replacing the current LJU master Socket.

If this is done, would I just connect the additional Slave LJU's in a serial connection? like

Master NTE5 ---- LJU ---- LJU ---- LJU ---- LJU ---

Or would I need to run all the cables from the NTE5 socket?

Forgive me if I am asking any simple questions.

You can do either. It doesn't really matter. However it will probably be easier and involve a lot less cable if you daisy chain the sockets.

Bearing in mind that you can only really connect three wires into the IDC blocks which means you couldn't wire four or more sockets back to the NTE5 anyway.

One thing you could do though is have two chains, one for downstairs and one for upstairs. Each chain starting at the NTE5. That may well be easier to wire up than chaining every single socket. It all depends on the layout of the house, where you want the sockets and how easy it is to run cable to the socket locations.

On the subject of cable runs. Avoid running cables under carpet. If you have to cross a door way take the long route round the frame. Don't be tempted to short cut by sticking the wire under the carpet. That will only lead to damage as people walk over the cable. Same rule applies for crossing hall ways. Taking the wire across the floor where it could get walked on is a big no no, even under carpet.

Getting wires into a room can be a pain. The best way is to drill through the wall behind the socket. Or if the door frames are wide enough through the frame. Don't tack a cable round a door frame where it could get squeezed between door and frame.

And don't run cable designed for indoor use outside. It might be OK but equally I have had to replace whole sections of cable where the outer insulation has become brittle, cracked open and let rain in and corroded the wires.

Stupid question, but what is daisy chain? Could you direct me to a diagram?

this is a daisy chain. but as chrisjr said probably best to do 2 chains, 1 for upstairs and 1 for downstairs.

BT are quoting me £135 now, for installing a NTE5 Master Socket.

I spoke to a BT engineer, who happened to be installing a new connection at the end of our road, according to him, I could just run off additional sockets from the slave installed downstairs. He doesn't recommend tampering with the Master Socket upstairs.


I think I bette go and get the equipment I need, will be back to give you guys an update.

out of interest, OP - how is the downstairs extension socket wired into your upstairs LJU master socket?

I didnt think that sort of master socket had the terminals for wiring in ext'ns like a NTE5 does?
