Might be worth doublechecking that there absolutely isn't a headphone socket.

I bought some low end LG TV for a grandparent a few months ago. I couldn't find a socket either - but it turns out that it's on the back, near the HDMI sockets. It's a square "lump" with a round hole - the 3.5mm socket. To me it looked a lot like a piece of plastic to cover a hole for a feature that a better model of TV would have had, but no, it's a socket!
Was it definitely a headphone out? Some TVs have an analogue audio input associated with one of the HDMI sockets which is used as a PC input. The HDMI connects to a DVI socket on the PC for video and the mini jack to the line out on the PC soundcard for audio.

Usually a headphone socket is on the side as that is often easier to get at when required. That is if there is any headphone socket at all, they seem to be getting rarer these days.

The workaround I use is to plug my wireless headphones in to the Tape Monitor RCA output of my AV amp. Although the amp does have a headphone socket plugging into it mutes the audio to the speakers so not very convenient (note, this relies on there being a secondary analogue audio feed from TV to the amp as well as the digital audio connection).

I use my headphones mostly for pottering round the house while listening to the build up for a live sports event then coming back to watch the TV as the action starts.

Yeah, it was - it's even mentioned as a headphone output in the menu (if you wanted to switch audio between it and the TV speakers) and it works fine with the cordless headphones that were connected to it

Personally I've never seen a TV with HDMI + audio, only DVI + audio, but I guess they might exist

Many TV sets, including mine, use an HDMI socket for DVI as electrically they are the same.
