Advice needed re: iPods
Jan4

Hello All,

I was about to go and buy some CRO2 audio cassette tapes when I went into Comet and got personally introduced to iPods and MP3s. I understand they're both the same except manufactured by different companies. I was very taken with the 'touch' iPod'. Looked easy enough. Nearly bought the thing but it was out of stock. Then came home and started thinking again..as you do..

Some questions:
I have some meditation CDs which I would like to download onto the iPod. Naturally I would only want a meditation to be played its' own, and not roll onto another when it's ended. Will the iPod allow me to do that? Is there a facility on it that will enable me to preprogramme it with a mixture of songs from my library and play those over and over again?

Sorry, I should have asked the sales assistant this whilst I was in the shop. This iPod thing is very new to me...even wondering if I will be up to its technology! But the thread on iPod compatible car stereo holds promises of a better life for me with a iPod rather than rooting around trying to go backwards in time for audio cassettes!

Your advice and views would be really appreciated!

Yes - to all the parts that were questions.

Simple.

On the iPod you have a few options.

Artists, Albums, Songs, Genres.

Say, I wanted to listen to Craig David and 7 Days and nothing else.

I could go to Artists>Craig David>Now 46>7 Days.

This will work the same for any song. Done.

As a general rule, an MP3 will be cheaper for the same capacity as an iPod. However, I'm aware that not all of them will just play a single track (strange, I know). Best advice, assuming you're not already completely bowled over by the iPod Touch is to ask for a proper demo.

Hi Cornucopia,
Yes, I was completely and utterly bowled over by the touch iPod. Was going to the 32 Gb one but they were out of stock. I think I'm being given a message from up there not to splurge out too much until I have explored all possibilities. Hence this thread. I do have alot of meditation CDs which would take up a lot of memory space.....

Maybe the price will go down at christmas or a later version with more Gb (have I got the terminology right?) will turn up?

Thanks for you advice and thoughtfulness.
God Bless and Angels watch over you always

I wouldn't buy one just yet, as Apple are due to launch new iPods (including a Touch refresh/redesign) in September.
From what I can gather, the price points are the main focus of the new iPods.

Thats used to be true pretty much right across the iPod range.

Not any more though.

If capacity is your main concern, I'd be interested if you can find a player the offers a better price per gb of storage than the 160gb iPod. (That offers at least a comparable amount of storage .... some crappy supermarket 4gb USB stick player doesn't count)

And I'm about as far from being an Apple fanboy as it's possible to get. But, much as I hate to admit it, the 160gb classic is good value for a LOT of storage.

OP - the iPod touch you've been looking at is a lot more expensive as it used flash media for it's storage. The classic uses a small hard drive .... which is why it's a lot cheaper.

I agree with Sancheeez. I looked at MP3 players and iPods. Overall the iPod won on appearance, performance, economy, and durability.

When turning a CD into a iPod or "mp3" player version, each track becomes 1 file (you can merge them but that's a different process) so they play as a regular track would. You can then organise those tracks/files into playlists (mixtapes), listen to them as the whole albume, shuffle them up, or in pretty much any fashion you want.

Sounds really exciting the things you can do with an iPod and a computer. Am really looking forward to getting one. Thanks!

And Mystic Eddy, Thanks for confirming that there'll be a launch in September. Gives me time to get used to the idea and familiarising myself with workings of this device.

Thanks (again Sancheez), Sirpipe, for taking me through this process so patiently. Appreciate it!

Blessings

Absolutely... It's all about value for money.

The iPod Classic 160GB is £229 from Apple - a little less elsewhere. If you absolutely must have 160GB it's pretty good value for money.

But in the spirit of solutions for all pockets... If you connect this to your TV, and put a 160GB Hard drive inside, you have a very functional solution for around £75. It will also play DVD quality video.

Hmmm.

On gigs per pound, the 160gb is pretty much unbeatable, I can't really argue with that.

But, if you see performance as functional capability then I'd say the Cowon A2 - for me at least - is a clear winner over the iPod.

But then, thats viewing it with MY requirements. Personally, I wanted video playback capability and battery life for video - it knocks any iPod for six on both counts, ability to use it as an e-book/text file reader (the touch didn't exist at the time and the classic screen is way too small), as wide format support as I could get (but mainly divx/xvid - which Apple don't support) and the best sound quality I could get (my wife has an iPod. having compared the two, the Cowon does produce nicer sound) and ultra portability (no special cables, just standard mini-USB, no iTunes, no drivers, no authorisation etc etc just plug in and do what the hell you like).

But if I'd wanted a lot of cheap storage for music, I daresay I may actually have caved in and bought an iPod ..... maybe ....

Horses for courses .....
