Cameron said it was. In an interview he literally spelt out the letters D-A-T-E...like he was all excited or something, and was too shy to actually say the word. ”
The Mirror newspaper report related to an interview on Boogie on Radio Forth. Cam was being teased about whether he was having a date with Steph and he said he was having an official d.a.t.e and they weren't to get excited ..it wasn't an exclusive etc. His words were taken out of context to make it look like it was a romantic date and not an official engagement.
On the northsound 1 interview, which went out the Sunday after the 'date' but had been prerecorded the week before Cam was asked about reports in the press about the 'date' and he said there would be other people there and "you can't believe everything you read in the papers." Again, in the Press and Journal article

“It was, ... a public appearance which they'd both been contracted to do for Big Brother sponsors O2 - nothing more, nothing less.
"Don't believe everything you read in the papers," insisted Cameron. "We're all so busy with official engagements we've barely had a chance to meet up but there will not be any dates.
"I don't fancy Steph and she doesn't fancy me."
”
So it wasn't Cam trying to be coy or whatever...it was the Mirror misleading the public again.
