Turns out it wasn't actually a date, they were doing some kind of public appearance in the Big Brother house for O2.

Cameron said it was. In an interview he literally spelt out the letters D-A-T-E...like he was all excited or something, and was too shy to actually say the word.

The Mirror newspaper report related to an interview on Boogie on Radio Forth. Cam was being teased about whether he was having a date with Steph and he said he was having an official d.a.t.e and they weren't to get excited ..it wasn't an exclusive etc. His words were taken out of context to make it look like it was a romantic date and not an official engagement.
On the northsound 1 interview, which went out the Sunday after the 'date' but had been prerecorded the week before Cam was asked about reports in the press about the 'date' and he said there would be other people there and "you can't believe everything you read in the papers." I didn't listen to the program, but some Cam fans after listening the program got also the impression there was something more to it that a promotional meeting involved. So it wasn't the Mirror only.
It seems it has become the norm for Cam to say things that are misleading or cause for concern and then we have to reinterpret them from a kinder perspective.
In this case I think he never suspected his teasing would be picked up by the national press. Sure being a native speaker he would have known the use of the word DATE used to describe a meeting with Steph whatever the nature of this... would attract interest. So claiming innocence afterwards and blaiming the newspapers are very convenient excuses IMO.

Asked "are you going on a date with Steph?" Cam replies ..no, its an official d.a.t.e......so don't be thinking you've got an exclusive or anything...Its not a case of Cam teasing but responding to being teased about Steph . I'm sure Cam's fans want him to be happy and many would like the story to be true , which can influence interpretation . I agree that Cam could have made things more clear but he and Steph have always denied any romantic involvement and maybe he's just fed up being asked the same question all the time. Cam is very aware of the press I'm sure . In the Northsound interview he did say he would be meeting Steph later in the week with other people but he said that as far as reports in the press re a date were concerned " you can't believe everything you read in the papers".I think he made things quite plain.
