My mince has gone brown!!

I bought some of Asda's 50p minced beef on friday and it's gone brown before i've had chance to use it

Is is still safe to eat? (best before date is 21st)

Its fine, mine sometimes does that too if I've had it in the fridge for a bit (and I buy from Waitrose)

I believe the redness is just preservatives anyway?

Have a sniff and I am sure it will smell fine!!!

Was it on offer, or is it always 50p ? I only ask .... as if thats the normal price, i dont think i would eat it

Yeah it was on offer...they had loads of things reduced to 50p

Well, if thats the case i would defo eat it ...... but in the next day or two. I dont think i would wait until the use by date.

Cor, i love mince. I eat it at least once a week. I love lasagne, spaghetti and chilli. Yum yum.

It's quite usual - it's to do with the oxygen in the blood or something like that.

Personally I would never buy bright red beef

Brown mince should be thrown in the bin.

Bacteria settles on the outside of a piece of meat and when it is minced the bacteria are all the way through the mince meat. This is why mince goes off faster than any other meat.

You are right about the bright red colour, really fresh meat should be a dark cherry red.

You don't really want to eat 'really fresh meat' you want it hung for 21or more days.. At which point it will be a nice deep brown colour
