I bought my first free range chicken from a butcher yesterday after I watched last weeks 'Britain's most disgusting food' program. I filleted both breasts and put them in the fridge and made chicken soup with the carcass and legs. Soup was fantastic, but when I smelled the left overs today it was off. I checked the two breasts and they were off also.

I've always bought supermarket chickens, which most likely are pumped full of preservatives, and they have kept well in the fridge for a few days.

Does free range go off quicker than normal supermarket chicken? or did I get a bad one, even although it smelled fine yesterday?

i've never had free range go off. I wonder how long your butcher had it for. I'd speak to your butcher about it as its not like that in my experience. Its almost like your fridge broke.

I always buy free range, and I've never had it go off before.

It would be unusual that the cooked meat would have gone off at the same time as the uncooked, maybe you do need to check your fridge like other FM's have suggested.

I'd roast the whole chicken on the bone, much tastier! Then strip the cooked meat off, simmer the bones slowly for 2 hours for stock and use that to make soup. That way you've got lots of yummy meat to eat or if you want, put back in the soup. Also it means it's all cooked and less likely to spoil.

If I just needed uncooked breasts I'd just buy them and not bother with the rest.

Chicken should be good for three or four days in the fridge once you've got it home. Will make no difference whether it was free range or not.

Only two hours!! I wouldn't have thought less than three is worth the bother, I go for five but then I tend to make it in big batches.

Fridge is fine. The chicken must have literally been on it's last legs as I was cooking it, but as you've said creamola foam, it's unusual that the cooked meat went off at the same time as the uncooked.

Yes, should have said 2 hours minimum, longer is definitely better.

My free rangers always last cooked for at least 3 days (normally all eaten before then) Not noticed the uncooked meat going off any quicker than broiler birds.

I've not bought anything other than FR chicken for close on 10 years and I have never had it go off in such a short time period - and the fact that the cooked went as quickly as the uncooked sounds to me like a fridge issue. However, as you have checked that Vic and all is well I guess it was just on the cusp of going off when you bought it. Perhaps it is the butcher's fridge which needs checking

Now that could be it, it's one of them open display ones which aren't that cool at all. They don't even keep mineral cool so how can they be expected to keep meat or poultry fresh
