Hi everyone
My bf and I have just moved into a lovely flat ![]() We have been offered the chance of a 6 week old kitten!! I want!! But... I've never had a pet before so i have a few possibly silly questions, can anyone help please? With regards to jags, dressing etc how much will that all cost? It is a boy cat, and will have to just be an indoor cat, is that cruel to the wee thing? My mum is allergic to cats Anyone have any tips on how to help her when she comes over? I've heard air purifier's really work!?Will it wreck our new couch? Odd question..... Is it bad to have the kitty litter in the bathroom? Next odd question... Will it make the flat smell funny? Thank you!! Im so excited!! ![]() |

I am now into my second month with my new kitten at our flat. He has just started sleeping through the night with us now after many broken nights sleep when he woke up and wanted to play. Get a litter box with a door they still smell a bit but as long as cleaned out regularly should only smell for a short time and cats don't like the smell either! The litter box also helps prevent the cat kicking litter everywhere.
They are curious and will jump and scratch at things. I have tried all sorts of methods and the one that works best for mine is to just say a firm no pick them up and place them away from the item you don't want them near. Scratching post is a must get more than one if you can. Get him lots of toys to play with they only cost around a pound and will keep them occupied. Most damage done has been to me and hubby as although he is calming down now at first we were covered in bites and scratches! Get the kitten registered with a reputable vet asap and make sure he goes for an initial check up and listen to the vets advice. |

Rainbowgirl - do both you and your boyfriend work full time? How did you "integrate" the kitten (if you see what I mean!), and was it already house trained when you got it?
I would love a kitten, but both me and my BF work full time, and I worry a bit that we wouldnt be able to give it the attention it deserves in the beginning. I know in the long run cats are independant and wont mind us working full time, but I just wondered whether they were ok at the start. Thanks (Sorry to hijack your thread sooty! You have had lots of great info though! Hope you get a kitten eventually!) She was fully litter trained and eating fine when we got her so that makes it easier We make sure we leave all doors open so she has the run of the flat. We make sure there is plenty of water and dry food for her. We feed her wet food when we are around so we know its eaten and not left sitting there all day. I make sure her little tray is clean every morning and she has access to toys, bed etc... Bewteen my BF and I we try to make sure one of us are straight home from work but in all honesty she isn't at all fussed. She always "appears" bleary eyed whenever I am the first one home, so she's obviously been asleep. There are never any obvious signs of her causing damage (although I know for a fact she swings off of the washing!!) She is always happy to see us, and shows no obvious signs of disliking being left alone. As I say the first week or so was really hard as I worried about her all the time but she's fine!!! We make sure that in the evening we spend lots of time with her. I tend to be the one who will sit and stroke her and have a cuddle whereas my BF is more playful and is the one that wears her out before bed. She also sleeps with us so has plenty of campany. Quote:
we got two 9 week old kittens 9 weeks ago as we both work full time. we also got them on a Saturday, so they had the weekend to get used to us.. took until the Wednesday until they'd let us touch them, and now I have one on my lap while typing purring like a little engine. They're great to have, and they keep each other company, and amused, and every day when I get home from work, the two little faces are looking through the banisters at me !
We're now facing the horror of trying to integrate them outside.. we're going away for the weekend on Friday, and when we get back, we have to let them out. They're 18 weeks, so little cats, but I'm worried because although we have a garden, there are a lot of cats around, not to mention dogs.. particularly one who is renouned for killing cats... and a cat who thinks she lives her too.. any advice anyone can give me will also be gratefully recieved ! As you say it was nice to have Saturday and Sunday with her before we left. And my BF only did a half day on that first Monday!! I would loved to have got two but realistically the place may be a tad small for them both!!! Amber is 16 weeks, and she is having her 2nd injection tomorrow so anytime after that she can go out into the big wide world. She wont be spayed for another two months though so we will either a) have to take her out on a cat harness or b) keep her in for another two months. Amber has escaped a few times into the communial Hallway and out onto our shared green and she always runs for home (which is quite lucky as she is bloody quick). Not sure I'll ever get to the point when I will be ready to let her go it alone ![]() Let me know how you get on ![]() Quote:

We've had Amber for 7 weeks and she is a complete live wire, although she's always slept at night. She is, however, up at 6am nibbling on fingers and toes ![]() We have a leather couch so she's never showed that much interest in it - she cannot get her claws in (yet!!) She tends to bite and scratch when she is in a playful mood so out come all the toys, although she still has trouble understanding when playtime ends and she is often a bit bitey until she calms down. Its a fact that kittens are lively, inquisitive, know exactly what they are not supposed to do and there is no controlling them however they do calm down, and my little one will curl up with me on the sofa for hours.

My leather sofa resembles a scratch post - but it is a materialistic thing, it can be replaced, the love and joy that cats bring , you can never replace that
OP - Enjoy your kitten! |

My two are still very much indoor until their ahem! visit to the vet in two weeks time.. then another two weeks until they can go out again...
They play with anything.. I found a piece of paper from a boiled sweet seems to be flavour of the month , and a paper bag... one is sitting on my sholder at the moment ( one of her favoured spots to sit - she thinks she's a parrot ) and the other monitoring my internet usage very closely .. They're great pets to have !! |

After experiencing my kitten going missing (he's been missing since August) I would say to anyone to leave it until they are 6 months old - it's just that my experience has left me very empty and with no knowledge of what may have happened.
Having said that I have had success with other cats in the past - just this one has taught me to be extra vigilent - they are more special then we could ever imagine |
